What's your best black tasting fig for 2013?(one only...)

OK...the story with this fig...three or four years ago,a good friend of mine from Benevento,Italy-Martino Vanoli, gave me three cuttings from his tree.He said to me-mia piccola negretta. This is how I came up with Negretta label. And I will keep the name of UNKNOWN NEGRETTA,in memory of my friend(he passed away last year).Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.  Thank you for telling us the story behind the name.

Mine was VdB--cheers for a timeless favorite :)

Petite Negra-RT

Geez this is tough, I guess it was Black Ischia followed closely by Preto, but then again Aubiqua petite was outstanding this year and more productive. So one of those.

Fig Name               How good scale (1-15)
Black Maderia  KK     Speechless! (15)
Ischia Black UCD      Pass out good (12)
Vista EPS               Slap your moma good (11)
Pasteriliere RTN       Pass out good (12)
Tilsbury's Turkey     Happy dance good (10)
Black Greek            Slap your moma good (11)
Noire de Caromb      Slap your moma good
Big Al                    Happy dance good (10)
Zemblas Black         Happy dance good (10)
Cartengna Negra     Slap your moma good (11)

Dennis, I'm very intrigued by your rating scale.  What would be the descriptions for ratings of 0 to 9 and 13 and 14?

I personally would like to try 'pass out good' sometime in the future!  :)

piccola negretta =  little darkie or  small darkie
me-mia   =   me my

this year among the 40 plants or so.... I only had 2 fruited VDB , and RDB , and it is a toss up but I will go with RDB I had more to sample .
If My Plants survived the winter....then MY data base will expand...hopefully.
Mark

Our favorite dark was. Angelo's Dark--Italian 258-VDB-
Sal's Corleone and Abruzzi.
Vito

VdB! Productive and very tasty (in a container).

Runner ups: MBvs, hardy chicago, petite negri.

Next year with more netting, we will see.

This is a diverse group for sure, just came back from the Tropical fruit forum to see what there best tasting fruit was,it was the Mango like 80% of them. With the fig forum, it is pretty much all over the place. A new comer goes nuts sorting things out.
I guess that is the idea, it takes a long time to come up with a group of tree,s to satisfy your endeavors.
For me i am getting close but have to wait till next years, like many.
I tried Smith not bad, negronne not bad, chicago not bad, latturolla better than Desert king,Magnolia taste like s....,Sal'sc not bad,Stella not bad,Osborn prolific looking for a donor.

My favorite dark fig this year was genovese nero

I did not try but a couple different ones but I would have to say Ginos

I have many 1st year trees this year (thanx Guys) that were rooted last winter. many did fruit and grow very well and fast in one year so i left some of the fruit on them. now with them all being 1st year fruits i know it may take a few years to get better fruit from them. though none of them where bad eather. but the best by far this year was a Sal's G. just a jucie explosion of flavor starting with that of a mild peach slowly tapering down to a plum berry blend. it had a very pleasent seed crunch to it. this its 1st year of growth reached four foot tall. trunk diam 2 1/2 inch  multi branched with 6 lat branches. 14 ripe figs this year. i ended up giving to a father and son i seen in the yard looking at my fig hedge. the son a Marine just back on leave asked confirming if they were figs. the father said that he had never seen one but the son had told him they where good, but didnt know they grew around here. i gave em a tour, picking ripe figs here amd there as we got to them. telling them about all the hardy figs. they sampled the Sal's last and both jumped with excitement saying the taste was unbleavable asking if i had any fig trees in the green house. unfortunatly i didnt, and they didnt want to try and root cutting but insisted they would be back in spring when i said i may have a few. but this is all another story.

This year it was Vista Mission, good looking darkest black, good tasting and early.
Then a family of four raccoons found them and liked its dark colour and probably taste too and they took over the harvesting of Vista and then the other varieties and I failed in every plan to catch them or stop them from wrecking the plants breaking branches and mis-shaping the trees. I hate their cute look.

Next year I'm going to Dennis's where I can;
Slap my momma
Do the happy dance
Be speechless
Then top the night off by Passing out.
That's a fig feast you can't pass up!

Tonycm

Francisco,

Bebera Branca looks the best of them all!!!
I could only imagine how good it is.

I love hoe plump and syrupy your figs are Fransisco, mine may never get to that, I have worse climate and no wasp to help, but it makes me think what I need to do to get the most out of them so I must pay attention more to what Martin does because to me his look like the next best thing to yours for my climate.

I see,.. you like my black figs!

Art,
In a sense you are right. I do appreciate from all of you, your love for figs and you infinite patience waiting many months, and the going through the 'pains' of caring them,  for the pleasure of tasting a couple of figs when the weather lets you do it !

All those dark's are excellent figs .. what Bebera branca misses somehow is the marked/deep  flavors of the other two (this makes it nr.3) .
But... but, in compensation it is much LARGER !! this variety mostly gives 'half-figs' too big for a 'mouth-full'. Wife is very keen to eat those halves using a spoon .

James,

Yes that's right,  that is exactly how I like to see and taste/eat my figs. Climate is in fact ideal over here, but I have to say that without the tiny wasp favors those figs would never be that pretty, big, full, sweet, flavored and with such colorations !!
I agree, Martin's figs show a high degree of excellency for his climate . Between you and me I think he may be keeping 'well guarded' a little secret !?

I am looking forward for the coming seasons, to hear what Harvey, Gina, Sue and others have to tell us after establishing good pollinators in their gardens.
