Black Madeira once again tops in yard.

Marius as a side note that Unknown in my opinion should not have Negretta behind the word Unknown for its
leaves and figs interior color look nothing like it.

Perhaps Unknown Marius or something to that effect.
My opinion.

Any fig that tastes just plain 'figgy', is for good for me.
Spare me those that taste any like x,y fruit - I rather buy the real y,x fruit instead.
BTW, nice pics.

For me, I have to say it again Colar was the best in yard for me.  Dark, refreshingly sweet, thick honey syrup, not overly sweet and a good fig taste.

Chivas I had to go look Colar after you mentioned it.  It really does look like an amazing fig!

my unknown Sicilian Blk, the brebas are delicious

For just taste alone, this year, 2013, it is Abruzzi. It beat out last year's Danny's Delight.

The wife tells me that this year her favorite is still the old, cold hardy, gold standard for this part of Connecticut, Sal's EL.

We are about as far north as one can get and still ripen, in ground figs before frost. We still have Brooklyn White, and Bayernfeige Violetta to ripen, and taste, as of 10-02-2013.

We still only have one stock plant of our strain of Abruzzi. Which is probably a good thing. Because if I had 10 Abruzzi trees, I would probably stand there and eat the fruit, until I got sick. I thought it was that good.

Vista from Encanto Farms, rich berry and peach tones.

Due to extreme unsuitable climate, this year all my figs were second class in taste and flavor.

Best plant that produced good fruits in more instances trough the Summer:
Adriatic jh
My year is not done,Col de dame and Preto,Madeira black are ripening now,so it might change.
Edit Note:
Sorry,I forgot you are asking about Black fig only,so here is my choice !
I had a couple of Preto fruits on Oct 10,and will choose ,to say they were the best tasting out of all the Blacks ,this year.
The Col de Dame Black is not ripe yet,at this point.

Top 5 black figs this year have been Petite Aubique, Preto, Black Weeping, St. Rita and Black Greek.

Black Triana is my BEST and also has a very large and good tasting breba fig

Well your figs looking very good, I guess this is the best fruit you get. Because they looks so fresh and there is no mark of any pest attack or disease.

St Rita and Marseilles VSB

So far, Brown Turkey EL (aka Southern Brown Turkey). Mild fig flavor, very sweet and rich taste.
Due to the poor weather this season many fig trees ripened figs in cooler weather and they were not as good as last year. Several trees are just now ripening figs, and my "Best" may change.

<Edit> OOps, Just re-read the title, and you asked for "Black". That would be Violet de Bordeaux... I had several ripen over the past week in drier but cooler weather (starting 10/6/13) and they have been extremely rich, with the flesh being much sweeter and richer in taste than the pulp.

with weather this yr, lot of my black figs didn't do too well. however, among those which i was able to taste, Kathleen's Black stood out.

As of today I would say Kesariani but still have a number yet to ripen so it could change.

I didn't get too many dark figs this year, but my Texas Blue Giant really was a winner!  Great taste, nice size, didn't drop its fruit.  I only let it ripen a few this year, hoping for a lot more next year.

I read these and I can't wait to have my figs producing a tasty harvest!
As a  side note, I have to say that I prefer the ID of Unknown  Negretta as I have a cutting from Marius' tree.  When I see "unknown Negretta" I know instantly that the Negretta from Marius is indeed an unknown fig, where as if the fig was named "unknown fig" I would assume it was a different fig and that didn't relate to anything I have.  It's less confusion for me. It's still an unknown fig.
Great thread!  Thanks!

Today the answer is St. Rita.

Maybe tomorrow with another fig, the answer would be different. :)

Sicilian Black is my new all time FAV, sweet raspberry flavor, huge and absolutely delicious!

hello marius, wish you would post more of your fig. seem like your not posting as many pictures this season. not trying to be pushy just enjoy your pictures and how you put so many in one shot. really motivating.

Hi Marius,

Aubique Petite, hands down winner for me this year.
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/aubique-petite-6571479

Until yesterday, I'd have said either Hardy Chicago (Hirt's) or Sicilian Red (from your stock originally).  But yesterday I picked some Aubique Petite, and they win easily for this year.

By the way, very nice pics of your Unknown Negretta (Unknown Marius).  Sounds (and looks) like a great fig!

Bob -- a question about your Abruzzi.  Do you know if that is the same strain as the one that Duane Smith got from Aldo Biagiotti?  (Forgive me if I should be tracing a different historical chain... i.e. maybe it originated from you?).  I've been interested in this fig for a couple of years, and Duane offered me a tree if I get up there to visit him.  (Just haven't made it up to the north country lately).  Do you know if that strain of Abruzzi sounds like the same source as yours?  I think Aldo Biagiotti was in Ridgefield CT.

Don't hold back Tam ... lol  what was your best tasting dark type ?

Martin I agree with you on the name of Marius's figs.  I vote for Unknown Marius too!  Maybe he would like to share some cuttings of that one?
