when i was little..

and growing up in korea.. there was a saying that farmers are miserable all the time. if there is no rain, they worry.. if there is too much rain, they worry.. they worry all the time.

well.. i'm not a farmer, and i don't care if it doesn't rain.. but when it rains like it did last month or so.. it's not too helpful. good number of my VdB have splitted at the eye, and the skin is cracking open. had few that just exploded and looked like sea cucumber committing suicide.

good thing is, i ate them anyway, and flavor didn't wash out much :)

Pete,
Of all my travels, I enjoyed Korea the most, My favorite Asian country.  I even like Kimchi.  Plus I had my suits made in Itaewon, (sp?), been a long time ago mid-eighties.

Don't feel bad, last year we had record rain falls for the summer with quite a bit concentrated in August and September including a hurricaine, right at prime fig harvest time. Needless to say virtually all my figs were exploding and sour.

danny,

i haven't been back there since i left. my parents and my little sisters have. they told me it changed a lot. i left right before president park's assasination.. now his daughter is running for the office of president. use to love going to buddhist temples. leaves changing color in fall.. clear streams. well.. now i live in pine state where everything is green all year long.. lol

barry,

i heard about figs exploding.. but i didn't expect to see them with my own eyes. it was a sight to see. :)

Pete, I'm well acquainted with exploding figs. Here are a couple of pictures I took this morning after the 6 inches in 3 days. I've been watching this go on since the end of June. Season = total loss.

gene, wow.. looks like you can't even eat those.. i keep my figs in tubs and make sure they drain well. but it's just raining too much of late.

Wow! That's amazing! I had no idea they could do that!
Looks like target practice with hand granades!

When I was little, Gram and Grandpa lived next door, and they had a fig tree.  We never ate the figs.  It was one of those that nobody likes!!  We did pick the blackberries, and ate the eggs from the chickens....

Exploding figs... who knew?  Guess there is some benefit to living in a no-summer-rain area after all.
