When is it time to start cuttings

OK I have some cuttings that I can start but don't know if it a good time. I am 0 for 20. So I am doing g something wrong but don't know what it is. I just purchased some parafilm to try that. If that doesn't work them it's just AL and full trees. If anyone has advice PLEASE let me know. This is getting very upsetting.

I start in Jan or feb. They seem to be a decent size when spring hits and are ready for up potting. Use the search function here and there are loads of great advice on rooting cuttings..

In your climate I would stick with starting them in early spring for the best results. That is, unless you have a greenhouse to extend your fall growing time.

You can start cuttings whenever you want, it's just a matter of realizing that you have to maintain good growing conditions for however long you plan on having them in that controlled environment.

I started a bunch of my cuttings last September and continued to start them as I acquired them through about January.

EDIT:  I should mention that it was a huge pain to have to maintain that many trees through the winter inside, but it paid off.  I'm not sure I would be up for doing that again, at least with my setup.

It seems largely to depend on what you will do for lighting during the winter.  I've started cuttings in Z6 in December, but then the trees are 2-3' high and 2' wide by May.  An early indoor start works only if you have good indoor lights and maintain care transitioning the trees to real temperatures and sunlight.  I've had cold, wind, and sun damage after moving the cuttings outside too soon (late April) in order to make room under the grow lights.

Late Jan to early Feb seems better to me, but still only if you have decent grow lights.  Window light generally doesn't seem strong enough.  Without artificial lights, I might wait until March so that the growing can get started indoors but begin in earnest outdoors.

OK sounds like early 2018 for another attempt. Thanks guys

You mention you have the cuttings now so go ahead and start them.  The longer they are stored the less viable they become.

It is a bit of a hastle growing them through the winter as mentioned above but if you have a south facing bright window you'll be fine and in spring you will be ready to up pot and grow outside and if lucky gets some figs next summer.
