when is the best time to feed inground figs the first time of the year.

just as the title states. i have a few in ground trees and have read once the ground thaws. but this is not very helpful. the reason i say this is not helpful is to the seveal climates and zones this divers family of figs grow in. as i understand some zones the ground dont even freeze. and in some zone it barly thaws. here in my zone 6b illinoise  location the ground was frozen last week it will unfreeze tommorow in our 60 degree temps but in three days when the temps go back to a high of 25 it will freeze again.

so the delma. i know its not spring until march but even then there may still be a ground freeze. so would feeding ahead of time in one of the ground thaws be bad. the trees are sleeping. our should i wait until the buds start bursting and swelling

4 hours and nobody responds

I wouldn't fertilize until after your last avg. frost date.

I generally start about 30 days before the 50% chance for frost (32F) date.  For my area I'll start adding Nitrogen next week.  My ground, however, does NOT freeze.  If yours does, I would not follow my advice.  Rather, I would wait until the ground is thawed.

I try to fertilize just before bud break. I use Vigoro Citrus and Avocado for the first application.

Maybe this is a dumb way to look at it, but if the tree is dormant because it's not warm enough, it isn't going to take up any nutrients you give it, right? So fertilizing too early only risks having your fertilizer wash away with the snow melt?
