Hello I am a noob when it comes to figs. Just starting out here and decided to get some cutting on eBay. My question is this from what I have read is. Is it best to start rooting them now or wait until dec/Jan? Thanks for your time.
I am in northern Iowa with south facing windows and grow lights for my citrus plants.

Welcome to the forum! If you start now you'll have to take care of 3+ foot fig plants by the time your weather gets warm enough to put them outside. If you can keep citrus alive in the winter you shouldn't have any problem with figs. Some people wait until April to start cuttings so they will be able to put them outside when they're ready to be potted up. It's all up to you as far as how much work you want to do, how much room and lighting you have and when you want figs. If you start cuttings now and keep them growing all winter you may have fruit next year.

Thank you rcantor for the advise.... I think i will root them now and get a jump start on the season since summers are not the longest here. The idea of having a fig on the first growing season is worth the effort. I was just concerned on them being leggy or weak but that may only apply to fully established plants. I plan on growing cold hardy trees and attempt to grow in the ground eventually with minimal protection. Great having a resource here with such great people.

i HAVE FOUND ROOTING PLANTS TOO EARLY A REAL PAIN IN THE BUTT. YOU HAVE TO BABY THEM AND I THINK THE TRANSITION FROM INDOORS TO OUTDOORS IS TRICKIER. I WOULD WAIT UNTIL AT LEAST FEBRUARY/ MARCH i KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT EASY TO DO IF YOU HAVE THAT DREADED FIG SICKNESS. WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE. BE PATIENT

If I had good sense, would have learned from last winter and just buried all my cuttings outside under the compost when it gets cold. But NOOOOOOooooooo! I have the dreaded fig sickness Coop mentioned. It kills all good sense. :) Welcome and good luck.

Yes the fig sickness is the real deal.. So to make things interesting I will try to root a few and see how well I am at it. Then hold off until closer to spring for the rest. Now I just need to stay off eBay and stop buying everything! Thanks for the replies glad to be here

Put those grow lights on a timer! :) That's one thing I forgot to mention. You can set your timer for whatever you want. Mine got lanky under 12 hrs but at 16 and over I couldn't keep up with the watering.
