When to pot up from 1 gallon

What is 'typical' time (I know, dangerous request) a fig tree spends in a nursery 1 gallon?  I potted up to 1 gallon in late Feb and am wondering if I will need to up pot before winter dormancy.

Thanks!

I guess it depends on how pot bound it is and what you want.  I like big pots since it gives me a little more leeway in terms of watering but my back likes smaller pots when I have to move them.

how fast do you want your tree to grow? i keep mine in 1 gal for a yr or longer. when i move up, i do extensive root work. since they are in 1:1 perlite and seedling soil, it's easy to do this.

however, this also means my trees are growing very slow. first 3 trees i started with were up potted very fast. 1 gal to 3 gal in 2 months. 3 gal to 10 gal in another 4 months. by fall i had enough growth for cuttings.

Thanks for the replies.  So I am guessing the roots fill up the 1 gallon pretty quickly, so for more overall tree growth, up pot sooner.

You want to allow a vigorous cutting room to continue growing or it will stall. Once roots are crawling out the bottom it is ready to move up.

Thanks, I will do that.  I want the trees and roots to grow as much as possible, hoping to plant a couple in the ground next spring.

Hi Brent,

Just notice you are real close to me.  Do you have any in ground trees?  If so, how long do you leave potted before planting in ground?

Thanks,
Phil

I have a couple dozen or so planted out. Some were planted as freshly rooted cuttings and some were 3-4 years old.

I did great with a RdB cutting I planted in June 2012. It grew to 5+ft. the first season, died back to the ground in the winter, then grew to 6+ft with multiple growths last summer and even ripened a half dozen figs.

It may be just my own routine for my location but I move my 1-gallon potted to 3-gallons around mid-July (sometimes to 5-gallons if growth is fast). They are happy with this and I am happy with them.
I pinched them in 1-galon pot for branching at about 12"~15" height. I pinch them again if they stubbornly insist to branch at the top node.
