Where did you find your first love?

Fig tree that is. I bought my first fig tree from Gurnerys seed catalog
http://gurneys.com/dwarf-fig-fruit-trees/p/13893/.
After that, I had some major surgery to my right arm and was off work for 6 months, I was going nuts day after day doing nothing. One day at Lowe's they had fig trees in one gallon pots for $10.00, I bought 3, two for me and one for my late mom. From that point on, did alot of surfing on the web and up to 40 trees now. What about everyone else?  Frank

Frank,

MY first love was "Stella".

I purchased her from a local nursery about eight or mine years ago when she was in a 1gl. container.
Took her home and the rest was history.

She has since long left me. I moved on.

I grow 100's of fruiting plants but never figs, in fact had never had a fresh fig.  3 years ago my neighbor called over and said "hey want a couple fig trees"?  I said sure,  planted them they grew and the next year tasted my first fig ever.  That was it....I was hooked.  Right now have 40 or so different varieties rooted (thank you generous forum members) and at last count 109 plants cupped up.  Have room for 50 or so fig varieties so have room to add a few more as I come across them.

Mine was in 1977... My mom and my brothers and I were in Shiraz Iran for an extended summer visit (I think we were there for about 5 months).  My mom's dad had several orchards, including a small one in the courtyard of his house.  We spent much of the summer sitting in the trees eating figs and pomegranates.  I can't even begin to guess how many of each I ate that summer.  I was hooked.  About 17 years ago, I bought my first two trees.  One was a Black Mission, the other Brown Turkey.  They both turned out to be Celeste.  In 2004, despite having a smallish sized backyard, I decided I was going to get 1 more fig tree.  I also decided to do a little bit more research on which of the six (that is about what I knew of) varieties to get.  That is when I stumbled into Gardenweb and met the likes of Georgi, Bass, Pitangadiego, Herman2, Elder, Pezzuti, Peg919, and others who took me in and put ideas in my head.  I discovered there were a lot more than six varieties...eight years later, here I am.

BTW... I still have a memory of a grape I ate in Iran called (I think) "yagooti" or "yagooteh".  This grape has spoiled me for any table grapes I can get in the U.S.  I wish I could describe this grape to you in other words than "incredible" and "amazing".  It is a small (med blueberry size), tightly bunched, purple grape with a very intense flavor.  If anyone has info on this, please email me.

I bought this thing from Gurneys.  It was supposed to be an Italian Honey.

Turned out it was Violette de Bordeaux

Still looking for that Italian Honey.  A FIG TREE!  I have a Norwegian Honey, and Happy with him!  Not sure there is a Norwegian Honey Fig...

Suzi

Grandfather's backyard as far back as I can remember.  Not sure what type though.

Grew up with one in the back yard - was grandpa's tree, the property use to be his.  When Mom and Dad married, he sold it to them to build their house on it.  I have always eaten them - as far back as I could remember.  Hopefully it will get ID'd sometime - now it's an unidentified Italian purple.

Few years back I decided I was going to grow something with my hands that I can eat. My wife shot down most other fruits. I heard that fig is easy to grow and can be kept in a container. So, I joined the other forum and started looking for three figs to grow. I knew I wanted VdB. I read a lot about Paradiso Gene. I didn't know what I wanted for third one. That's when Gene H. sent me an email with 6 different trees. I picked Kathleen's Black as third. I think I made good choices. This has been a great hobby. I'm enjoying the figs as well as great company we have on this forum.
