Which fig trees will do good in zone 6b

Hi everyone !

I live in NJ , in zone 6b. I wanted to try a few different types of trees like the green ischia, peters or italian golden honey and white genoa. The problem is different sites are showing them in different zones. Will I have success with a tree that is requiring zone 8 as long as I protect it in the winter or is the warm weather season too short?
Thanks

I have all the ones you mention with good success

How is you plant doing now? Any changes?

Paul...there is a post on the Forum(I think it's at the top of the first page)that will give you a pretty good idea of the best figs for your area...but, that doesn't mean you can't try other trees as well...some of the members have trees growing in their areas that are meant for warmer zones, but with reasonable protection, they should survive, and maybe even fruit....and buy the way, welcome to the Forum...good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm think I'll try them some different types and protect them best I can.

I have 2 fig trees but do not know too much about them. I was told try to plant them next to a structure for protection and also for the reason they like the cement, and to also throw the used coffee grinds in the soil.

I went out and bought lyme but not the granular type , the pelet type. Should I return and get the granular?

welcome to the forum Paul.
You can grow anything you want as long you protect them and you don't have any pollination problems, some trees ripe there fruits early and others late in the season, some trees need pollination and others don't.

I think the two types that you have are fine

WELCOME !
Good luck Paul.

Hello Paul,
Welcome to the forum community.
There are a few members that have posted on varieties that they have trialed in the Northeast, with many recommendations and experiences. Topics started by members "Herman2" and "robertharper" usually have a lot of information for Cold Hardy and productive varieties.
Good luck.

Hi I am in Central New Jersey to,i have only been into fig for 3 years, but I have about 30 trees in ground, and they are doing great.I'am in Keansburg.Try to go with the hardy one,and if you Protect them you can do a lot's more, you need trees that will ripen. There is a lot of tree that will do great here in NJ.Vic from NJ.good luck.

I'm in 6b illinois. The trees I am growing with out problems are petes honey, hardy chicago, purple magnolia. The petes honey and hardy chicago no protection needed but likely you won't get brebas.

I have 3 desert king trees that were top killed. They will be protected this winter. Along with VdB, RdB, MvsB, black bethlehem, osborne proliffic, allbique pitete. And several unknowns. Those that I have more than one of I will leave one unprotected while protecting the other. Hope is that next season I will have some hard data as to cold hardiness, and protection.

i'm in your zone in west jersey, send me a pm and we can exchange info, joel
