Which of these fig trees for Florida/bay area?

I'm planning on giving a fig tree or two to my parents.  They live just south of St Petersburg in Florida.

Obviously, it is very hot and humid weather there with tons of sun, "pop-up" thunderstorms constantly through the production season, so there is a risk of spoilage for certain figs.

My parents like figgy, fruity flavors and care more about richness and flavor than sweetness and juiciness.  They don't care either way about seed crunch.

Of the following, which do you think would be best to give them?

  • Conadria
  • Beall
  • Italian Honey
  • Marseilles Black
  • Fico Preto
  • Vernino
  • Excel
  • Uknown/"Foxcroft"
I realize there's only one or two people here that know about Foxcroft, but I have an extra or two, so tossing it out there as a choice ;)

Any tips appreciated.  They'll be here the next week to hang out with the new grandkid.  I hope to send them home with a tree.

I gave my Dad a LSU purple and a Strawberry Verte and they're doing great. He lives an hour north of Tampa in Brooksville. Don't know if thats helpful :-I

With the choices that you gave I'd go with either Italian Honey or Conadria. Both are pretty tasty and green figs are supposed do be less apealing to birds.

-Good Luck!

Conadria, MBVS(Marseilles Black) Both do well+++++ in similar climate

Jason,

Foxcroft. It grows very well here. I tasted fruit from the mother tree this year. Sweet. Productive. Probably Celeste.

MVSB. Members in south FL (Sal) tout it.

Preto. I met the Preto mother tree while in San Diego last week. I have never seen a tree so productive with such beautiful figs. The taste the figs after two days of constant rain was very very good. The size and color are better than advertised. If it is Black Madeira, then the BM is a bad mamma jamma!

Sue V, when you have a moment, I would love to get a copy of the photo you took.

I say Conadria or LSU Purple.  My Conadria does great during hot summers like this past one and never splits.

I don't have an LSU Purple to offer - only what I have listed above. My Conadria is really growing like a champ, so I may send them home with that now, and give an MBVS next go-round.
