First of all, the species is Ficus Carica. This applies to (almost) all varieties of edible figs. If your only goal is to raise fruit in a non-Mediterranean climate, then you should stick with the common type. These are not self pollinating, but do not require pollen to set fruit. They will set and mature fruit on their own (meaning, they do not need another tree to pollinate), but the seeds will be sterile.
If you are seriously trying to breed a new variety, then I'm guessing you would have already know all that and wouldn't post the question here.
