whiskied figs

There is probably nothing new under the sun, but this was new to me. Figs were like whisky candy. Whisky was sweet and smooth.

Bill,
Interesting...how long did you soak the dried figs?
I love the taste of fresh figs, but dried figs don't do too much for me.  Maybe if I soak them in some liquor it will be a win-win scenario.
Cheers,
Jim

Jim, I soaked them over night. But I think Longer would be better. Dark rum might be worth a try also. Nothing is like a fresh fig, but I thought this made a dry fig more interesting.

Greetings

Good thread and info what u did. This past summer during the peak ripening of my Hardy Chicago and others, I picked about eight beautifully ripe specimens and placed them in a thoroughly cleaned olive jar (the narrow, tall types) and then filled with a very nice ruby red Port wine. The figs soaked in there until Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Turned out very nice rich fig flavor infused with sweetness of the Port wine. Two left for New Year's Day. Cheers.

back in korea, my grandmother used to soak fruits in liquors. they will stay in there until things turn rather nasty. was too young to taste them back then. i think i'll try soaking some figs in wine to see how they turn out.

Now this is a brilliant idea. Will have to try.

Well, I've had some dried store-bought California golden figs soaking in Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum since New Year's Eve.  (It's the 15th, so that's two solid weeks.)
I just tried them -- HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE.
The figs themselves were even worse than they are straight out of the bag/box!!!  I'm thinking the alcohol sucked the moisture out of the figs.  They swelled just a little bit.  I was imagining they'd plump up, i.e. they'd get rehydrated.  However, they were drier and tougher after soaking for 2 weeks.  The dried figs straight from the bag seemed luscious by comparison.  It also didn't do anything for the taste of the fig itself -- not very palatable.
The liquid (rum) itself does seem to have taken on a slight fig flavor, so I'll have to mix up a drink with it.  I don't know if the figs themselves have a future.  I sprinkled them with some sugar just to see if I could improve the taste, so I'll check it in a couple of days.

Anyone have any thoughts?  Maybe two weeks is just too long.
Jim
