White Adriatic

Brebas from yesterday. Even though it has been 60s and cloudy, these were great.

Very nice looking breba

Hi Jon.  Those do look great.

And as I recall, you are not generally a huge fan of brebas, so this is high praise indeed.

I learned a valuable lesson today concerning brebas: PICK NO BREBA BEFORE ITS TIME!

I picked two brebas today from our Georgia White Hybrid (unknown origin).

The first one looked great, but didn't taste that great.

The second didn't look very good, but tasted GREAT! It was much more ripe than the first one.

From now on, I will know that beauty is only skin deep on the brebas, and the older less beautiful one (starting to crack and fully ripe) is far better.

Best wishes to all.

John

Wow!  Looks great Jon.

Most brebas ripen here into something not worth picking, let alone eating. This one is a definite exception.

Comparable to JH?

JH?

JH Adriatic.

Haven't had any brebas on my JH Adriatic. So I guess that is a big "I don't Know".

No sign on my 1.5 to 2 yr old. But have some mains. Maybe next year on Brebas. I would like to find  a worthy cultivar other than the typical for brebas so as not to wait til Aug or Sept.

I think Cecil or Herman could chime in. I believe they grow them.

Yes I do have JH Adriatic

And mine was planted in ground March this year, It had two Breba figs on it, I pulled one and let the other grow...I wish I had pulled both, that fig was so bad the Hogs wouldn't eat them.

We will try again next year if the tree makes it through the Winter, if it is no better than it was this year I will not let the Breba stay on it!

Mine has some main cropper on it right now, lookin forward to those.

Hogs eat just about anything! That's not a good sign.

I know you are right Dom.

Never had a Breba from Adriatic JH,but had a few main.
Once you taste them,I am sure you can't live without this one.

Ditto

That is great news Herman & Anthony!

Luckily, if the in ground one don't make it this Winter I have two backups.

Thanks.

Herman2,

Totally agree about the taste and performance of JH Adriatic....never had a breba on my tree either. It is a real winner cultivar in my area.....even though there are no figs on my tree right now.

FYI........Magnify the taste and sweetness of JH Adriatic a bit and you will get some idea of the taste of Smith which in my opinion belongs in the Adriatic family of figs (green skin with red pulp). I'm still curious to know how well Smith does in northern climates.......any idea??

Well I will just make a SWAG on why my JH Adriatic had brebas this year, is because

it was potted all last Winter, I might never have another breba on that tree!

We will see??

......will be waiting for that breba report from you Cecil.

Will do Dan,

Sorry, Dan :I do not have Smith, maybe Anthony Does?
By The way:My JH Adriatic has a few main crop fruits at this point.
They are like elongated medium blueberry size at this point.
My tree is in the second year after rooting, and it spent the winter inground, with frost protection.
It also produced half dozen fruits last year when only a few month old.
That tell me it is special.

Herman2,

I think that I may still have a small Smith. I will send you one for your fig trials.....it can tolerate rains real well. You are the right person to trial this fig up north.

Dan Semper Fi-cus

Thanks Dan:I would appreciate, getting a Smith doesn't matter how small.
I also have a couple of new selection,I think might be good for the south in your Backyard.

An active CRFG member gave me cuttings of her White Adriatic fig this past winter, telling me that "everybody tells me my figs are the best".  I don't have fruit on any of my new trees yet.  I have an extra plant and will be bringing it down tomorrow to Jon's for the Fig Fiesta for a silent auction.

Anybody else with experience growing this variety?

HarveyC, White Adriatic, along with LSU Gold, found considerable acceptance as a for profit fig in Hawaii.
