White Christmas

Well it should be a white Christmas in the Capital this year, Washington is getting a good foot of snow with reportdly a storm coming from the south and affecting the Washington, Boston ,New York Jersey Baltimore, Philly.
Ah a we might only get 1 to 4 inches and it might be rain or a wintery mix.
Meantime my fig plants dont give a hoot as of course there fast asleep in garage.
So for some of you folks might get a lot and perhaps not , its good insultaion i imagine for your figs trees.

Martrin,

75ish here and wake-the-figs-up weather. There is a reason that the song is "I DREAMING of a white Christmas...

Ciao Martin, yes there is a storm coming up this way!!! there is warning all over our televisions.  May not let husband work out of town tomorrow. Ciao

No snow here but we got 12+ inches of rain yesterday and into the night lots of flooding of roads and damage reported to cars and roofs. Luckily we were OK, pool started to over flow and lucky I was home to open up drains as water was starting to come into patio it was getting scary there for a while. Veggie garden under water and I guess this will be a good test for the Conadria as I have 3 more ripening and a few black. I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
Sal

Sal, yes i heard about much rain there, i always was interested in the weather as i first did a science project on it in grade school. I also remember well our biggest snow storm back in 1967 on my birthday when 2 low pressure systems collided bada bing!
1979 well i was partying with some friends who came up with the brain storm of going ice fishing in Wisconsin that night (Lake Geneva) we loaded up my 1974 lemans. We made it up there only to find snow drifts up to our waist and beyone turned around for the drive home and the e-way was 1 lane only out of 4. People were getting stuck and everyone was helping each other, almost 5 hours later we made it back to our neighborhood and i dropped of 4 friends as they lived on same block when i went to leave as i was parked right on street i could not go anywhere so they came and gave me a push and away i went. I later got rid of a brand new ice auger ( never used) and told my friends never again for ice fishing. Many years later after working outdoors in train yard dealing with the snow and cold and 600volts of electrified 3rd rail power i have had it with snow.
So 1 day the Misses and i will pack up and head for warmer climate!
Course i will have to figure out how to manage the fig plants in yearly long warm weather as im used to them going dormant and such.

Yes and a Merry Christmas to All  !

Martin, don't leave us midwesterners!! We'll miss you! Before you go you must pass the fig torch to many other Chicagoland folks. My Dad retired to FL about 10 yrs ago, he was sick of the snow too. At least I had him plant a fig. Good luck on your journey...where ever it may lead you.

Martin,

Not too much snow at the time where I was ( last week ) but,
Calgary, Alberta: -20F
Edmonton, Alberta: -30F

Try Pulling an Empty 53' trailer on an icy road with the cross wind ( with blowing snow ) hitting you at 50 mph.

I'll be home Tuesday and I'm taking the rest of the year off!

Rafed,
i have watched ice truckers and was always amazed at the conditions they encounter.
When i drove the rapid transit trains before i had enough senority to pick in my true classification the trains wold often slide on them icy rails and it was a wake up call for sure with a full load of passengers during rush hour on a 6 car train. Course before i retired they came up with devices to "somewhat counter" that.
Each year here by me on i-80 there is a bad truck accident or jackknifed truck when the roads get bad.

martin,

Those are your over confident knuckle head truck drivers most of the time.
I slow it down and don't care who complains!

I've been cussed at and criticized on the cb radio only to see them 15 miles down the road on the ditch. Guess who got the last laugh.

tmc2009,

I have one of the large green metal mesh wagons. In the spring time I put all the little 1gl to 3gl pots in it and when I hear there's a frost coming I just have one of my family member haul it in the garage for me.

There's nothing I can do with the larger 10, 15, 25gl pots since I'm not home most of the time but I never had any issues with the large pots.

It's usually the young small pots I worry about the most and  I found using the wagon made sense and was easy for anyone at home to do.

As for the Global Warming, I don't think so! At least not where I've been.

The funny thing here is that 2 miles from me they only got 3-4 inches of rain .They say isolated showers on the news so I guess it was isolated over my house. Lol I think 12 inches of rain would amount to about 4 feet of snow does any one know as my father in law and I were discussing this tonight. I don't think I know how to drive in the snow any more. You all be safe
Sal

No global warming here that i know of  either !
Rafed here are the trains i drove thru around 1984 or so then we had to brake in to drive the new ones that arrived which had more options but broke down often as a switchman later in carrer it was my job duties to bring drive the broken ones into the shop very carefully i can tell ya a bunch of stories of switchman derailing , going thru shop doors and such i was lucky thruout my carrer never an accidentbut close calls.
The 6000 series trains will always hold a special place in my heart. In my later years the young trainman used to say you drove those and would say i remember them a child riding on them noisy trains. Still have my keys ; )
Here is link, before they governed them down we could run em past the cars on the e-way as top end was 70mph.Some made it to museums and some were sold and put in service in the Philly area during the mid 80s.

Edit: snowing here maybe a few inches they say them some more Dec 24th maybe. Long Island well they have a Blizzard warning set for tomorrow and lots of the east coast gonna get SOCKED.
Good insulation for the outdoor covered fig plants!

You figgers up north can have your snow and keep it. I'm like Sal, overburdened with rain. We've had rainfall of 8 to 11 inches with the 2 systems that came over us. I'm just glad that we we on the edges of the rainfall pattern. The heavier stuff hit right to our north. Still it rain every day for six days. I brought my potted trees inside for fear of too much water. It's great to wake up to sunshine today.

Gene just seen in my local paper that 12.99 inches was recorded in my area. and many Pics of flooded roads.
Sal

Ciao, we are getting what Martin calls " SOCKED" with snowfall. We have tons of snow falling here now. Going to get worse later. It is beautiful, but dangerous.  Bad storm so far here.  Ciao

That sucks I hate snow I keep telling my parents they should of moved to California when they moved to Toronto. Its actually sunny here in Toronto today no snow on the floor but it is -5 celcius outside -12 with the windchill.

I just read that 2 football games have been moved from 1:00 to 4:00 because of storm in NE for Sunday to give them more time to prepare the field. Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens Must be a biggie coming your way
Sal

Good ole fashion NOREASTER what it amounts to being fed by the western atlantic (ouch)and a spinning low pressure system.

Washinton will get a snowfall that amounts to several years worth SOCKED!
Just shoveled driveway  and gave stored figs a cool breeze.

You need to move south Martin-- a lot of rain here, but the outside geraniums are still alive. All the figs have lost their leaves, but I haven't had to move any into shelter yet. I just trimmed a small brushpile off one fig tree today.

Scott

Don't jinx us, Scott.  It looks like we will be in the 20's at night the next couple of weeks, and around freezing all week long!

satellitehead and scott,

Hope you enjoyed your moment of glory.
I would feel right at home with that cold spell your getting.

Boy, If it weren't for Christmas I would have paid you guys a visit.
Too bad.

It had to happen sometime, Jason. Looks like my back will be sore from stuffing the crawlspace full of potted figs!

I never thought about using the crawlspace.  Do you ever have problems with rodents nesting in your plants?  Does it ever freeze under there?  Is it covered?  What side of the house is your crawlspace?

We have a crawlspace under our front porch which is ~ 18'x3'.  Everything is thick cement wall except the small doorway and the ceiling.  The ceiling is a deck with 1/8" gaps between the boards.  It's on the northeast side of the house and is covered by a roof so it never sees direct sunlight, except on the side door (2'x2' opening).  Unfortunately, it is only ~3' tall inside at the tallest point, but I could fit an army of smaller figs under there.  I would need to go inside and remove some dirt to make it taller if things would need to be bigger.

I just never thought of using a crawlspace to overwinter figs.  I would be afraid it would get too cold and damp in there.

Who needs a crawl space - you just leave them in the yard. The right climate fixes all these issues. ;-))

Jon,
i liked that sense of humor.
When i just read that post it made me make a big smile.
