White Genoa Pics

  • PHD

Here are some pictures of the White Genoa fig. The tree is a very fast grower. The taste was mild & delicate a little on the bland side. I kept it protected on the deck so I'm not sure how well it would have withstood the rain. Also it ripens very late (early October)

Nice pics,  thanks!  I was recently given white genoa cuttings by an elderly man who had been the next door neighbor of my great uncle and aunt for nearly 50 years

XXX, I purchased this tree from Joe Morle if you look at his website figtrees.net the description matches my fig in the pictures. Maybe there are several varieties going under White Genoa?

I checked it on http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_White_Genoa.html

Medium fruit. Yellow-green thin skin. Yellow to light strawberry flesh, few seeds. Good fresh and dried. Avoid hot climates. Coastal. (007) Large, green-yellow skin, reddish pulp. Good most years on coast. Used fresh or dried. (011)

XXX, the above description comes from the same page figs4fun.com. So there appears to be 2 different descriptions for the same fig. Not sure which is the real "White Genoa"  Maybe the difference is due to climate?

Dear Pete

I have a white genoa, not JM, there are several nurseries selling this variety, yours look like mine, I definitely noticed that my trunk is VERY thick for a 2 yr old potted tree, they do ripen late, not a heavy producer either.  Do you think it's a keeper??  I posted some pics under an earlier post about Panache figs because the nursery mistakenly sent me White Genoa but I wanted one from JM anyway. Thx

Rafael,
The first year the figs were on the bland side but last year they really improved and tasted excellent, they also ripened much earlier (late August) This year they have still not ripened but they are starting to swell. I will let you know how they taste and post pictures. I think I need to keep it around for another year to make a decision but if they taste like last year then its definitely a keeper.

  Peter

My white genoa is a late fig ripens around early to mid October this is from last year the last of 3 that ripened the first one tasted the best.

Picked the first ripe White Genoa for this year, it probably could have used a few more days but its going to be 39 tonight. Not as good as last year, not bad but not in the same league as JH Adriatic. I will give it one more year to improve but it appears to need a lot of heat late in the season that we don't have in NJ
