White Greek

i have a question on White Greek. i heard great things about the WG. and i taste potential, but it seems it's not getting ripen well here. this is the first year that tree put on the figs. how long will it take this tree to give full mature taste? from other figs, i can taste the improvement every year.

my WG was sent to me by very generous forum member. it grew very well, and gave me 3 figs this year, there were more, but i knocked them off so it will do better next year.

the figs are very big. but the top part of the fig takes sometime to ripen while the bottom part is ripen way before the top and start getting really ugly with spots. i heard it will have to be ugly to taste great.

i'm hoping with age this will change.

here is link on my WG. it's the figs in the center that is long.

Pete, I am 99.999% sure your White Greek is Vasilika Sika.  I have both WG and VS.  I have 2 each from different sources.  One came from Jon V and the other came from Jose.  I know they are the real deal.  Both of mine trees are not the same.  Your tree is Vasilika Sika.  My WG has white flesh and very sweet but more round, not elongated like VS.  Your tree is a VS no doubt.  Here is a pic of  my VS.  I got a pic somewhere of my WG.  I just need to find it.

I think the figs get better with age.  Last year my VS fruited with just 2 figs.  Both figs spoiled and I never got a chance to taste them.  It was a different story this year.  This year my tree is over 6 foot and gave me 6 figs.  All were excellent but the uglier they got the sweeter they got!  Sounds crazy but seems to be the case for my area.  Here is a pic of one fig I picked.

cheers!

dennis,

maybe mine is VS. it seems there was a talk about WG, VS and Dalmatie being the same fig.

Looking at thread you started on your WG, i can tell that's definitely different from what i have. but it seems some believe that there is another WG that is very similar to VS and Dalmatie.. oh well.. it's how the figs roll.. lol

Thanks Pete.  Thanks for pointing me back to that thread on WG.  I've heard about Dalmatie but lost mine this summer.  Mine came directly from Europe and was the real Dalmatie.  I was trying to see if all these were the same, Stella, Dalmatie, VS and White Greek.  Since I only have 3 out of the 4, I guess all I can say is in my area, my VS and WG are not showing me that they are the same fig.  When I bought my WG from Jon he said it might be the same as VS.  I bought it to see if it would have the same leaf pattern and fruit but my 2 WGs are white inside and big like the one in Leon's pictures in that thread.  The only difference is the interior is amberish and white in color.

Well, I'm not a fig expert.  In my honest opinion...NO ONE IS!  But I want to build up my knowledge base about my figs and document everything I can and record my observations inside a database.  If there is one thing I learned this year from visting UCD is that figs on one tree can have different inside color (inside and out) and shape from year to year.  Go figure!  Jon and I saw this a few months ago and were amazed.

For years, I've been collecting a lot of fig trees from all around the the globe.  Some I have are duplicates and that's alright because I think valid data from figs need to come from different sources to see if they are the real true named fig.  Today I have over 500 fig trees.... 220 in 30g pots, 32 in 5gal pots, 70 in 3g pots, and 105 in 1qt foam cups and 70 in my orchard.  And I got another 152 in gallon pots.  I know this might sound like a lot but it's manageable with a drip irrigation system which is a must.

Early this summer I stopped posting pics and writing about my trees.  Why?   Because I did not have enough time to photo, convert the photo to 1m, then upload and write a comment.  It was just too much.  I bought an IPAD and with it you don't have to convert the picture but this forum is not IPAD friendly and I sill have email the pic to another mail server then open and upload the pictures on a Microsoft machine.  It's just too much work!  I will say this about one fig and if you don't have it, try to get one.  It's called Barnisotte Gris.  It reminds me of a long and fat Smith fig which is another one of my favorite figs.  I did not list it as an outstanding performer because I want to only hint about its greatness.  Only those who read this thread will know.  One day, BG will be as popular as Ronde de Bordeaux!  I think Dr Leon has this fig.  He knows how super awesome it is!  Sorry for getting off topic but I am researching a lot of figs, BG is just one of them.  Toni's Brown Italian is another one!

It looks like I need to find a source for Dalmantie and continue my research.  But for now, I will document my WG as NEED MORE DATA.  Pete, I recommend hanging on to your tree for a few more years.  We have a good climate for figs, 4 full seasons.  Bump this thread up in the summer and lets post more pictures of our trees.  Hopefully others will chime in and do the same.  All we can do is keep talking and learning from each other and of course, eat more figs.

Cheers!

dennis,

thanks for the reply. my WG(?) is very much like your VS. that's for sure. looking at your older posts, your WG from jon doesn't look at all like mine. i have Stella cutting coming soon. one more for me to taste. then i just read that Stella might be similar to Persian White and i have some PW cuttings coming in also.. this is a sickness.. i can't seem to stop getting more figs.. and i'm running out of place to put my containers. i'm seriously thinking about digging ground now. i'll have to find some way to keep all my figs. and i'm no where near where you are at :)

I hear you Pete. I keep having this dream that I bulldoze the neighbor's house and fill the lot with fig trees. My guess is that figs are behind the launch of the Roman Empire.

Vasilika Sika (Syka) is an excellent fig but here in Albuquerque, it continues to be a shy bearer, even after 3-4 years. My potted tree has not given me more than 3-6 figs per season. It may be our altitude and conditions. I support that VS, White Greek, Stella, and Dalmatie may be synonyms for the same variety. I'll give it one more season.

Dennis,   I joined google plus.  I set my phone to upload photos there automatically.  If I want to share photos I go there and copy the URL and paste it here.  Either Apple or Instagram has the same thing.  If you have lots of photos you're probably better off with flicker or something similar.  You can then just direct us to your album.

uploading pix is a pain.. tho showing off good looking fig is always fun.

i dont think persian white is similar to VS/WG. i think persian white is similar to white triana based on my recollection of what i read in another thread.

happy figging

too many figs. i might have read wrong. either way, i have been wanting Persian White for very long time and it's finally on the way!

heard back from the generous member who gave me the White Greek. mine was from jon. but also heard if it's VS, it's even better :)
