White Kadota

This is one of the only fig trees they sell locally here. Still have yet to get a crop from white kadota. i seem to have a ripening problem, but we had a frost this week (1/10/13 - 1/15/13) and to protect the tree I covered it with a table cloth. After 5 days the figs have ripened. I don't know if the added warmth or humidity helped ripen the figs.

Are there more than one type of Kadota? The ones I have seen had an amber center and tasted of honey.

Green Brown Turkey ? lol

This White Kadota is also called Dottato, Dattero and last and not least, Jurupa.
Does any member know if this is true?
I thought Dottato and Dattero where Italian fgs!

Wow!  My Jurupa, a single cutting from a member, rooted and shooted, and is growing well.  If it turns out anything like this, I'm a happy girl!  You get one cutting.  You get one chance, and that bad boy roots?  Treasure it!  Woops!  I have a few Dottato too.  So they are all the same?

Thanks Dale for the article. Especially this:

which means that ficus carica which now designates our common fig, at the times of the Romans it was the name for our Dottato.

Jurupa according to Durio is a Condit Fig

How can it be if Jurupa and Dottato are the same fig and Dottato goes back to the Romans?

Or is it another case of one of these figs having the wrong name?

Pretty sure Dottato/Kadota and Jurupa are not the same fig. Hopefully I will get both (all three?) to fruit this season for comparison.

Does anybody know if Binella is the same as Dottato/Kadota?

Can't help you with that one, Art.

I am not familiar with Binella but in the past Forums it was a question:

Mines amber and tastes of honey. Maybe there are different Kadotas.

Jon,

Does this look like a Kadota? Are they cold hardy?

This one grows unprotected here in 6a.

It looks similar to a kadota, but the skin should be a more yellow when ripe. The leaf pattern on my kadota is a spade shape. Its a nice looking fig though.

i have both kodata and Excel. My friends in Rosenburg Texas trully love their Kadota. My Excel flat out produced my Kadota. I agree, Kadota to good....but Excel is better in my opinion.

Dennis I'm with you on excel I love the flavor. I'll take an excel over kadota any day.

You ever see the olive oil ripening method?

I've heard of the olive oil method, your suppose to put some olive oil on the eye. right?. But I've never tried it. Does it work?
