'White Marseilles' Fig tree given to the Pope

Interesting article 450 year old White Marseilles fig tree

http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/7667

Very interesting here is a description out of Hilgardia;
"White Marseilles became attached to a fig that Brookshaw described and
illustrated in color in 1812 of fruit gathered by himself from the original tree at the Archbishop of Canterbury’s palace at Lambeth"

I bet you that now White Marseilles will be in high demand.

Does anyone believe that this is the same common variety we recognize?   (coming from Edible Landscaping)....  which supposedly was also grown at the Monticello.

Thanks for the link to the article.  Interesting gift for an so influential a guardian.  Provenance of the fig tree, equally as interesting.

Never been there... but does Rome get really cold winters?  I hope that this tree isn't suddenly excommunicated by the weather?

I hope the White Marseilles fig tree is a pious, devoted, and faithful servant.

Rome has hot summers and cool winters.  Seldom if ever freezes.  January low average is 7C (45F).  They may see snow once a year.
The new Pope's fig will be very happy there:)

Pino-

That's good to read.  Thanks for the update.

I'm sure he was thinking "More summer shipping done right"
Very neat article
