Who can be crowned craziest fig fanatic?

Jo-Ann....

Very perceptive.

I knew at a very early age that I was a mental-case.  My school years, and my teen years, especially, just proved what I already knew. Others knew it too.  I thought that as I aged and gained some wisdom...some, insight into what life was all about...it would change my warped mentality....but, no dice.  I'm still sick!

If there was a "rubber-room" for fig growers....I would be renting a three bedroom duplex, with a river view!

I recently bought over $300,000.00 in potting soil

What? Crazy and rich?

I seem to recall someone eating figs with ants already inside. That's pretty crazy too.

eating ants isn't "SO" crazy... especially if you pick most of them out first.

On Saturday, October 27, when I realized Hurricane Sandy was definitely going to hit NJ, I got going early and stowed all (missed a couple) figs in the garage.
After the figs were safe, then I got the house and yard ready. Definitely crazy.

The crazy thing is that I want them all!

haha, thanks Shana.
My family and I and our homes are safe.
No power for 10 days....... and No Complaints here!

Shana way to go. It's not the same as buying your first car but it is probably in second place. LOL

I got up at 4:30 AM, put on dark clothes and gloves, and armed with my pruning shears, I mounted a steep hill, and shhhhhhh  took green cuttings from an unknown tree growing on county land.  Don't know what it is, but I got 2 living trees out of it.  Almost slid down that hill twice!  It was steep!!

Any more contenders?   I've decided to crown the 2012 craziest fig fanatic soon.  It will come with a prize.  My husband thinks it would be me, but by crowning someone else, it will not be me, and I can tell him there is someone else who is the reigning champ.

I hear that the American Psychiatric Association recently approved changes to soon-to-be-published 2013 revision of its DSM (diagnosis manual), so that they will list "Hoarding Disorder" as one of the official  diagnoses.  (I have not verified this personally... it was reported in the local newspaper, and here are a few links:  http://arstechnica.com/science/2012/12/apa-to-drop-aspergers-syndrome-from-its-diagnostic-manual/ and http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/02/health/new-mental-health-diagnoses/index.html     The second article makes mention of "hoarding").  I suspect many of us on this forum will fit the description of hoarding, based on our fig tree collections.

Mike

Haha,
Let's go folks, most of you must have interesting fig stories.

Suzi, you are lucky you didn't run into the boys in blue, especially w the dark clothes and gloves on. lol
Like Ricky Ricardo said, you got some splaining to do.

Thank you for all the entries. It was a tough call but there can only be one winner. There are some real crazies here, but the crown goes to the fanatic whose singular purpose for a long road trip was for figs and only for figs.

The 2012 Craziest Fig Fanatic winner is "Snaglpus."

(Snaglpus: prizes forthcoming. pm me).

Congratulations to Dennis!  So, what are these prizes Figfinatic?  Cuttings?  Fig Jam?  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Suzi

Congratulations, Dennis!  It couldn't have happened to a more devoted guy.  :)

Spending 20k on a couple of mature Fig Tree collections in a 2 month time period.

Dennis, it couldn't have gone to a nicer fignatic!

You mean I really won?   Wow, I forgot all about this thread.  I don't know if I should say thanks or go back in my office and talk some more to my chair!

thanks!   One day that chair is going to, "MAKE MY DAY".

Bought tiny fig plant without ever having tasted them before. A guy from Southern Germany was really enthusiastic about them and got me interested so I read about them and became intrigued. I tasted some Brown Turkey figs a few months latter and they were okay but not amazing, but I guess they don't ship well and were under-ripe. I'am yet to taste any from my own fig tree, but a crop is developing at the moment.
