Who gifted me Calabria Fig Cuttings?

I received many cuttings from members recently, and although Calabria was not on my wish list, it must have been a bonus from someone.  Please fess up!  I want to properly thank you because I have two now rooted and in their growing cups, and one has leafed out.

I don't know much about this one, except it's from Italy's Calabria region, so any info you could provide here would be great!

Whoever you are, you made me very happy with this easy to root fig, and I look forward to raising it and to tasting it's fruit!

I am publicly thanking you but would love to put a name to the donor!!

Suzi

That was me. I also put two unknowns with them a dark and a white.
You are very welcome!

Thanks Art!  I was concentrating in getting them all situated in their Sphagnum Moss baggies and labeled, I forgot who gave me what, unless it was specifically something I asked for!  I'm going to now go put your name on the white and dark unknowns so I can keep you posted on those too!

I learned something now!  PUT THE NAME OF THE DONOR ON THE LABEL!!!

My trees have not yet gone dormant, but you'll be receiving a surprise from me in a month or two!

Anything you can tell me about the features and benefits of that Calabria?  Like flavors, colors, size, stuff like that?  :-))

Thanks again!

Suzi

I am interested in this fig too. My mom's family is from that region of Italy.

Suzi,
That fig is very, very, sweet. With a berry taste. My best fig! It is larger than a Hardy Chicago. I did post a pic of the fig. It does get larger. I wonder how it will do in your climate. Probably better. This tree is from an inground tree. Usually unprotected.

padsfan,
Where do you live? I take it New England area. I have some potted up in 1 gallon pots.

OK Art,

I did a search and figured out that you sent cuttings of unknown Italian, but also 2 named Calabria.  The calabria have rooted, but the others not yet.  I'm assuming they are the same?  I saw the pictures but didn't see one of the actual ripe fig.  Is it green with red inside?

Wow!  Your best fig and bigger than Hardy Chicago?  Now everybody is going to want it!!  I'm willing to share if these babies root and thrive for me!  :-))

Suzi

Suzi,
I sent 1 bag labeled Calabria fig. 1 bag labeled unknown dark. and 1 bag labeled unknown white fig. The Calabria is more of a purple color. There is a pic of the fig in post # 32 in my "free cuttings" post. The other 2 figs are in my post of a "couple of my unknowns".

Art, thanks so much for telling me the color of Calabria!  Purple!  Love it!!

I know your family is crazy for that fig, so I can't wait to taste it!  Both cuttings rooted, and I put dry Sphagnum moss over the peat/perlite mix to absorb excess moisture. and although one had a green hint of a shoot near the top, it got buried in the lightly sprinkled sphagnum moss.  It has roots.  It will show green soon enough.  I go check the leafy one several times a day!  It's one of my babies now!  :-)  They are in the guest bathroom and the window there is made from those glass bricks, so they don't get direct sun, but they get really bright light every afternoon.

I'll go search again for the photos.  You now left me with a conundrum!  If YOU didn't send the unknown Italians, I'll have to figure out who did!  So far those, and all my recently received cuttings are showing green tips and tons of root initials.  Got lots of hope!

I truly learned a hard lesson!  From this day forward I will label the baggie with the variety AND the person I received the cutting from.  I think the problem was connected with too many cuttings arriving from different people within a day or two of each other.  I hope my hard lesson is learned by others reading this.  A cutting looks like a cutting, so I do label them, and I thought I'd remember who sent them.  Evidently that's not so!!  :-))

Everyone in this forum is so generous, and I want to show my gratitude to everyone who has been generous to me!  I also will be paying it forward as much as I can!

Thanks again Art!

Suzi

I seem to remember you saying rcantor sending the unknown italians along with his Desert King.
When I sent the first Calabria cuttings to you and they got sent back. My mistake big time!! I ended up rooting all of them. After being in the mail system for 2 weeks. All 5 cuttings rooted for me. They have leaves and now in potting soil. My bags that I sent you said "Good Luck" If that rings a bell.

Art,

Thanks so very much!  They may have come from Bob, although he did send some desert king cuttings, as did someone else.  You have a better memory than me!

There is a ton of mystery cuttings that were a bit strange, in that they were not single cuttings.  They were branched.  They are tucked into sphagnum moss in a big plastic bag and inside a huge beach towel surrounding the plastic.  I think I know who sent those, but you have enlightened me about the Italian Unknowns!

I'll shoot Bob a PM to confirm.

Rock on, and be careful in the storm!!  What an ominous thing that is!!

Take care!

Suzi
