I've had the pleasure of meeting Jon, gorgi, Herman, Ed p, Lou p, and a couple others.
What fig grower have you met already?

I have not met anyone personally but have had the pleasure of speaking with Gorgi and Leon on the phone. I will be the first to propose a Fig themed Cruise. It would be an easier sell for our better halves and the family could join us. If you get enough to go, the cruise lines would provide meeting rooms and maybe even accommodate A/V devices.
OK so I like cruising. As of yet I have not been on one I didn't enjoy and gain weight.

Jazzbass the pleasure was all mine.
I say we should take a cruise to a fig orchard in Spain or Italy...
For those who live within a driving distance to Pennsylvania. They're will be a few workshops and presentations in Lancaster, pa. by the backyard fruit growers. They'll be presentation on making wine and growing different fruit trees. I will be giving a small talk on growing unusual fruit and a little on figs.
Date is February 20th, at Landis valley musuem in Lancaster, pa.
let me know if you need any info.

Bass did that cruise in 2008 17 days from Fl to Savona Italy some stops along the way were Santa Cruz, Madeira, Barcelona and ended in Northern Italy. Missed opportunity as I was not into figs at that time only can dream of a repeat with pruners in hand. lol

Bass count me in on your area group meeting.  My parents live in South Jersey.  If given enough advance notice I can go visit them.  I always go to South Jersey in October and will be there for a short time the end of this month to celebrate my dad's 90th birthday.

I have visited Jon, Herman, Ricci, and almost got to see Bass.

Sal, I like your idea of a fig cruise.  My wife and I took a similar one that you took. It was a 17 day cruise to Northern Italy, Barcelona, and Madeira.  I was into figs when I took the cruise and was able to bring back cuttings from Pisa, and Madeira Island.

Met R.Watts with my US bro-inlaw. However, very thankful to touch base with many regular fig guru's & some less known guru's who have a superb collection from Canada & US.
Soon, if uncontrolled my collection is heading to be germplasm size. Unfortunately, I have the spirit & figs but no money.

17 days cruise would turn me really round. I will be going on one soon with 30 plus friends for 7 days and already I am wondering how to keep busy.

The only one I can say I met face to face is Dan. He lives about an hour away. A real nice fellow. I hope to go to California this summer and meet Jon and Sue. Oh, I forgot, I met James Robin. He's not on the forum but he does grow figs.  Fatandsassytexan and I have spoken on the phone, now that is one generous fellow. I just wish he were a little closer but this summer if I head to the La/Tx border like I've done the last 2 years, I just might drive a little further and meet up with him. I also plan to make a detour to meet Jstall sometime this coming year. He's also in east Texas but further north.

Then there is Rafed and all the great members that I've corresponded with either by PM or email. You are the greatest and I must say generous. It always been my pleasure.

Well, people who have been here are Bass, Rafed, Sue V, Jose, Bill of Bill's Figs (he's doing a return visit on Monday), and Vern. I've been to Richard Watts a couple times, as well as UC Davis. I've seen several local fig grower's places. I think I could visit 30+ states and meet up with someone who I know from the forum or from selling plants, as well as a few foreign countries. Just might take a stab at it one of these days. People are always amazed when I know the weather in so many places, but it is easy to keep up on when I get a weather report here almost daily for much of the country.

Went fig cutting with Sue, today. Tough job - 60F, sunny, slight breeze, and conversation with a nice, old Portuguese lady - still tending her grapes, loquats, figs, cherimoya, atemoya, citrus, mulberry and fava beans. And a lady down the street with Black Mission figs that were 50+ years old.

In August I'll be meeting with Eve in Buffalo, NY for the 2nd year in a row. She might be bringing a friend who collects figs as well. We're planning on having a big fig swap....again! If anyone wants to make it up there let me know and I can give you more specifics. I'll be bringing at least 6 or more different kinds of potted figs to trade. I'm happy to get rid of my extras and get some new varieties. Should be fun!

Bass, the Northeast fig gathering is a GREAT idea.  I would love to attend if you can put a gathering together.

I've only met ep3 (Ed) and Bill of Bill's figs but feel like I "know" many of you.  Hopefully, I'll get to meet many more of you this year.

Little John, please send me the details of the Buffalo fig swap.  I don't want to miss THAT.

Rafed, you are most welcome.

Yes, Chilliwack is beautiful. Surrounded by snow capped hills and famous
salmon rivers and close to thousands of lakes in the interior
for superior trout fishing & just wild, wild wilderness and yet close enough to
major cities like Vancouver(90 mins drive) and Seattle(3 hrs drive).
BC is huge and we have a population of under 5 million. I was once told BC is the same
size as CA, Oregon & Washighton put together. I did not check whether its the truth.

I was telling my wife about the fig summit.

She gave me some great idea which I will now claim as mine.

1. Have it near a place where we can see a commercial orchard or big fig place.

So far, we have suggestions for the Northeast, Southwest and Northwest.  Sounds like you will need to plan SEVERAL fig summits.  Maybe you could scheduled them at intervals to coincide with the average ripening date of the  main crop for each area...especially if it is near a fig farm.

During ripening time most of us will be busy picking our figs.
We should think of a place such as a garden that's a meeting point and convenient to most of us.

I have mentioned about a fig reunion for all of us before, that would be very neat I think.  I have spoken to a few people on the phone and alot of private emailing for many different reasons, Not met anyone face to face yet.  I was told I speak very similar to Gorgi, never spoke to him so don't know. Must be because foreign born, I never thought I retained the accent, but almost everyone notices it, I always am asked if I am spanish?  I would like to meet everyone one day.

I REALLY like the fig summit idea.

Bass has nixed prime fig season as the time and has suggeseted a garden location (that is sensible since probably very few want a hoard of marauding figheads loose in their fig patch).  Anyone have any more specific ideas for a date and location?  May?  June?  NJ?  PA?  NY?  Brooklyn Botanical Garden?  Central Park? New Jersey Botanical Garden?  Other?

Ciao Maggie,
Jon has a way about him ( good way ) when he reads a paragraph he can find something and make it humorous which is nice in this day an age, i sometimes do similar but not even close to Jon.
Speaking of voice my wife who was born in Spain has a heavy accent similar to the movie actress whats her name from there i always tease her when she say mayor and she says MaJor instead but its a nice tease.
My dad had very heavy accent being from Italy.
Parents always called me Marteen which you know of course is the italian way of my name , the misses does sometimes as well.
Friends and neighbors call me Marty.

Ciao Martin, I know it was jon just teasing,  Who knows, maybe I sound like a man??? :)  no I don't think so. I don't think I have the accent anymore as I was young, but everyone picks it out.  When I really want to sound like a yank, I can just like everyone else, but I am not always on top of it and slip back. Yes, I would pronounce your name as Marteen as well.  When I have a couple glasses of wine, noone understands me, Husband always asks me what did you say?  Also, when I am mad, even I can hear how it comes out much thicker and I speak really really fast then. Oh well.  Ciao!

I plan on meeting with Rafed by this summer at the latest, if he can stay still long enough at home for us to plan something.

That being said, I truly count many of you as kindred spirits and friends in the truest sense of the word and would split my last fig with any of ya (as long as the wife didn't see it first....lol)

Hi all,
Newbie just getting started with cuttings and one 10 yr old tree brought from Florida to Northeast Texas.  I have been a real lover of figs most of my life and have really enjoyed the pursuit of cuttings from mature, what I call legacy trees.

Would love a get together in the ARK-LA-TEX area

I've met a few people (some active, some not) from this and the GW forum.  About in order: YaddaYadda, Georgi, Bass, Mountain Man, LosLunasFarm, Jeseyphresh (lives next door to my ex wife).  I haven't had an experience, yet that was any less than wonderful.

I don't know why the symposium has to be a single day event.  Why not start in the south and follow the trail of ripening figs?

I can't wait until the North East fig meeting this spring. Will be nice to meet more of the members. There are others that I may never meet due to location. a few moments  for questions. He was preparing for his toddlers birthday and had a bunch of stuff to do.

I would like to see the members in the Atlanta area get together to do the "fig talk" in the future and maybe just have coffee or lunch.

Any takers?
