Who is growing figs in a 4 season greenhouse?

I am installing a 4 season greenhouse  this fall. I am putting a heater in there as well. Does anybody grow figs in a greenhouse or extend their season in one? I am wondering if they would taste the same with no direct sunlight.

I can't answer this, but I hate to see a post go ignored, so here is my take, NJ.  Go for it!  Then you will be the expert!

Me, I want to try growing breadfruit from Jamaica in So CA.  I'm thinking I'll need to cover that 80' tree with plastic, just to mimic humidity.  Heat is no problem, and it never freezes here.

Good luck with growing figs in your greenhouse!

By no direct sunlight do you mean they get sun through glass that will be shaded in the heat of the summer?  That's no big deal. There's a guy in St Louis who's been doing that for years.

BTW, I'm insanely jealous.  I've wanted to do that for years.  Maybe someday  :)

This is my greenhouse attached to my garage. It is a 14x40, roof and west side has clear lexan . The front and east side i only close in winter when figs go dormant and i reopen in spring after last frost. Those were 3 year old trees last year, this year they are hitting the roof which is 10' tall. Off one triana calabrese last year i picked at least 300 figs and this year it will flower twice as some of them will be ready to eat shortly. And yes they do taste just like outside figs.

Jason you need more space you can use my back yard if I can store my rollinia in it over the winter

Look under my posts and there should be pictures of my greenhouse, i cant post them, i don't know what i am doing wrong ,maybe somebody can put them on here. thanks

We have several figs in our greenhouse with the orange shade plastic over top, the one getting the most sun tastes the best and then others aren't as sweet but still good.  There is another greenhouse with a Sicilian red and they taste just like outside figs but it gets full direct sun all day.

Sorry, the link posted above does not work.

If it is raining outside, then greenhouse figs taste better for sure.

Found Mario's picures click here to see all http://s287.photobucket.com/albums/ll155/triplembeagles/figs/

Very nice set up. Mine won't be that big.

Mario, nice setup!
Jason, since I was/am consideri
ng a greenhouse (smaller), I read a book this winter, "The Winter Harvest Handbook" by Eliot Coleman. More geared toward commercial Maine/NE small growers but he points out that NYC(New Jersey) is on the same latitude (41) as Naples, Italy, and south of basically all of France. So, while colder in winter, we get more more winter sunlight than France, where they have winter gardened for centuries.

Mario- Have you noticed whether the figs grown under glass stay fresh longer after being picked? Also, does morning dew form in your greenhouse?
