Whole foods fig plants

The Whole Foods in Portland, Maine has fig trees for sale. They have Black Mission, Celeste, and LSU Purple. One gallon pots for $12. Nice looking plants up to 3 feet tall with figs on them. Some were starting to ripen.

Thank you Swizzle!  I have to go see them tomorrow!

All figs ought to be priced reasonably as that.

The whole foods in Lexington, KY has the same selection.

The Whole Foods in Chadds Ford PA had Celeste, Brown Turkey, LSU Purple, and Black Spanish ( although they were sold outwhen I got there).  1.5 gallon pots, and tree's were about 36" (including pot).  I paid $17.99.  Plenty of stock available when I was there on Saturday pm.

Midtown Manhattan, check. I work a few block from the store, so I wanted to see. LSU Purple, Celeste, and Chicago Hardy. I took a nice-looking LSU Purple, but many of the trees were in good shape. One of them had a cool, juvenile praying mantis on it.

Which whole foods in Manhattan? Maybe I can get a Celeste.

57 between 2nd and 3rd. They have about 15-20 trees right outside the entrance on the sidewalk. Check one of the taller Celestes - that's the one with praying mantis :)

I'll be there!!! Thanks!!!

I just saw the praying mantis statement! Lol

The Whole Foods in Columbus had trees as well! They were 16.99. They had Spanish Black, Brown Turkey, Hardy Chicago, and Celeste. Very nice trees with nice sized figs. I bought 4.

We are in the sticks.  Dammn!  No whole foods close.  We have Sprouts, but they don't do anything cept herbs.

Jeff - I'm going back to the Whole Foods tomorrow and possibly buying another. My commute has me walking, subway, walking, bus, driving...I tossed it around that I'd buy 2, but then reason prevailed. But agreed, the trees seem to be quality.

At the Portland store I picked up Brown Turkey, Celeste, LSU Purple, Black Spanish and Hardy Chicago for $12 each.  At that price and size I couldn't help myself.  I'll pot them up to 5 gallon buckets this week and overwinter them inside this year, but they'll go in ground next spring and get trained into the step over espalier form.  Thank you Swizzle!!!

BTW, it was funny.  Someone asked me about how to grow them here in Maine and the next thing I knew people were asking lots of questions.  They thought I worked there, but I was really just working for the figs :)  Ended up making my quick trip a bit on the long side, but I hate seeing people fail with figs up here in cold Maine.  Met some nice folks.

I joined the bandwagon and went to Whole Foods tonight, picked up a Celeste, Spanish Black-not really sure what this is and a BT?, I believe not.  Here are pics of the BT?  This is at the Old Town Whole Foods in Alexandria, VA.

This does not look BT to me.

( edited: OK, My BTs may be different. There are so many that are called BT; BT Munro, BT this and BT that....)

I have a question about the blue shoes.  Are they "Native" brand?  If so, where did you find them?  I've worn mine out... and I have suntanned dots on the top of my foot to prove it. ;)

That is not Brown Turkey.  My first thought was Brunswick, but I think the lobes are a bit long and too thin.  Do you mind posting pics of the Spanish Black (Blackjack)?

That's exactly what my brown turkey looks like from them. I thought it didn't look like my others, but what do I know LOL...still a newbie.

James, Blue shoes are my husband's Crocs. Sorry not Native brand. Here are a couple of the leaves on what they are selling as Spanish Black:

Thanks for the heads up. Contacted the one here in RI and they had some too. A friend of a friend who works there got asked via text about availability, they responded - "We do but there's no point really because they won't survive outside in the weather around here unless he's going to grow it inside."

Pppppffffftttttt!

Ain't he heard about that fig shuffle?!

Hi twovkay,
This is not standard Brownturkey, but could be another version or Brunswick. You'll know when you get a ripe fruit !
For that price, it is worth the adventure !
I myself bought at Spring time a tree labelled BT that I knew was not BT, but for 7€ well, let's see what comes out of the hat .
If the fruit is like the BT, it is fine with me !

Anyone from California see any? I would buy a few.

I called 2 local Whole Foods and they don't have any in stock :( they said they have been trying to order some but the distributed doesn't have any ready :(

Driving between NY and RI today I hit the Danbury, CT location for their last fig. It was a Black Spanish - with what I think are oddly shaped leaves that barely resemble those posted above. Then here in RI the Cranston location still had a half dozen. LSU Purple, Celeste, and BT... I scapped up the tallest LSU but there was a pretty twin that I left be for some other lucky figgers! Great deal. Again, thanks for heads up and I will try to post pics of the Black Spanish to compare.

So here is the Black Spanish out of the Danbury store.

All different leaf patterns - most common is that skinny three lobed duck's foot looking one.
