They will stay on if you leave them on but they will probably dessicate on the branch. My BT in-ground is doing the same thing right now.
Jerry- Have you been potting up all season to get to that large tub size? Fresh potting mix = fertilizer = fresh growth.
Yes I have. I wanted more dirt around the root ball, so it does not freeze in the garage. I lost two other trees last winter, and I hope with more soil it won't happen again?
That will help protect the roots. I would pinch the tips or even prune them a little tiny bit so there is less soft wood at the end of the season. Bringing it inside for a month or two will help it harden more before it goes into the garage. The tree will still go dormant inside once daylight hours are less than about 12 anyway.
Pinching makes them harden real quick. I pinched the tops End of August and now almost all brown. Cooler weather will further harden.
