Why is the 'Galicia Negra'. so EXPENSIVE?

Please, can someone tell me what is so special about this one? I am looking back 3 years since it was over $300 on e-bay and it still sells for that. I can never win it unless I bid higher than $250 dollars...When will this tree ever be available or be reasonably priced?
Does anyone own one? What makes it so unique other then the inside color?

I am new here so I hope I get a few responses..Thank you))

Mike

Mike,   G/N is a great tasting fig, one of the best in a lot of people's estimation.  But the cultivar is one of the very worst at rooting; so it is the old supply and demand scenario of capitalism...  there just aren't enough available to go around, so the price is what the traffic will bear.

If you can wait until this time next year, you can get a G/N plant for $15 plus shipping:    http://www.figcuttings.com/p/custom-fig-tree-orders.html

   Welcome to the forum!

    Blue

I haven't tasted it yet, but it's supposed to taste exceptionally good.  The biggest factor in the price is probably the rarity coupled with its looks/taste.  It's supposed to be a slow grower, too, which contributes to its rarity.

I've got 6 of them that are rooted and leafed out, but I'm growing them out as mothers, so I'm holding onto them.  If you're willing to wait till next March to receive a GN, I can grow you one for $15 (as Bluemalibu noted), but that's the best I could do timewise.

Wow, such fast replies..You are all just too kind and I really appreciate it.

I am actually collecting figs for my sick Aunt who is not doing well with cancer and lupus, and I have been growing figs just for her since it's her favorite fruit...I had one here and there but give her most in which I do not get much. I have heard that the 'Galicia' produces well and ripens early and is sweet which drew me to really wanting to attain one. I love my Aunt much, but just can't bring myself to give that kind of money for a fig tree, beside most can't afford to..I would be willing to wait for sure, and in the mean time I can keep trying to get what I have to ripen...

Here is my e-mail address just in case we should keep in touch through the year and I am still awe at such good help and kind hearts. Thank you again.

You definitely won't be forgotten :)

What cold hardiness zone are you located in?  If you share that with the group, there are lots of members who can suggest good varieties for your area and help your Aunt eat more figs :)

The Mt. Etna varieties (Hardy Chicago, Marseilles Black VS, Black Bethlehem, etc) are some that everyone should have imo.  They're productive, tasty, and do a good job of ripening good figs in borderline climates, both in pots and in the ground.

Any further information or source would be appreciated!

You already have one coming.

As you can tell my brain is fried!! Too many figs floating around in there.

Join the club!

I found it super easy to root. Hmm.

Actually, the cutting I got had already rooted and I screwed up by knocking off two of the three baby roots. I cut it in half and both ends rooted successfully. GN doesn't have FMV or any noticeable growth problems, and it's kind of a beast in terms of growth rate.

Anyway, OP, I'd wish you good luck but it seems that you've already found it. :)

I wondered the same thing about this and other varieties on ebay. I tried to get cuttings from ebay, and for a long time found it hard to win an auction at a reasonable price.......at least what I thought was reasonable! ;-) I watched MANY auctions for just a couple cuttings easily go over $30, not including shipping(averages $6-$10?)!! Whats the deal? I suppose it's the same for most varieties; taste, productivity, rarity? But I even noticed that some more common figs were a bit high, and had bids on them! Still just a newbie, someday I'll understand and probably be hunting down very specific varieties and spending big bucks to get the right cuttings. For now I am perfectly happy with what ever I can get my hands on to see what works for me!

Hello,

What I meant was since GN is very expensive ATM, an equally good Napolitana Negra would be a good option as they almost look similar. The only source I know is Baud, MP and Harvey. Harvey was selling GN cuttings for a decent price . If you wait till next season you can buy Napolitana negra cuttings from MP for 5 euros unless he increase the current selling price.

here is a link on ebay, seller is authetic

Thanks

  Shame on you, Vinny...

Just wondering Does the fig police really come arround and give trouble or is it just a myth. I can understand that people might not want to share their bad experiences but don't they really have other pressing issues to deal with. The customs usually confiscate at the point of entry as far as I know .

It's only funny because it has basis in reality, Vinny.  Everyone that I've talked with that inadvertently purchased a plant over Ebay from abroad has been visited or was contacted by telephone.  And several people were visited due to their having been turned in by persons unknown.

It happens this way:
Some new fig first gets discovered; then and due to some nice mouth-watering pics and/or a good review,
suddenly every us figaholics want it.

It is the usual question of the supply and demand curves.

I'll be having both my Galicia Negra, & Ponte Teresa coming in some near/distant future.
I presume that the quantity is (very) limited (& @ a very reasonably price too!).

Hint: Ask greenfin for more details ....

Thanks a bunch GreenFin.  I can't wait for next spring already..

Wow, fun stuff here and I can't believe one can by a GN at Walmart of all places..I live in Ma. zone 6 and can't even find a simple fig sold at Walmart...
Hope you are all having warmer weather than I...Snow tonight and teens at night..Don't get it. My figs have to come back in for days again(
