Why some fig cutting is so expensive ???

Imported varieties are not out of quarantine yet.
No plans to sell on ebay at this point,
as I don't have the ability/time to deal with retail orders,
due my businesses.

If you are interested in growing for fruit production, yes,
but as you know, dealing with cali and az regulations
is both expensive and a nightmare at times.
So as practice to date, I've avoided any activity in CA,AZ,HI,AK
and export as well, workin on that.
If you want to accept all costs and responsibility for a shipment,
I could accommodate you in early 2015,
everything for 2014 is spoken for at this point.


I realize they are not out of quarantine yet but I can be patient.

If you could, please email me harveyc at gmail dot com works easiest and let me know what you will have available next year.  Cuttings would be easiest for me and for you. Thanks

Interesting story that I shared with someone the other day. Sometimes varieties are more available than we realize.  I went to a chestnut conference in Italy and really wanted to import some Italian chestnuts.  Chestnuts are a prohibited item, though, and can only be imported by USDA research stations or facilities they approve.  While I did later work with such a facility, I first acquired some of the most desirable varieties from an old retired UCD professor who had imported some of the best varieties 25 years ago or so and nothing was ever done with them other than sitting in a small block that the university still has set aside for him out of respect.  Even though I had talked to him here several times before, he never mentioned it.  He happened to be in Italy at the time of the conference to receive an award in Bologna (25 of the professors there had studied under him so they were recognizing him for the help) and he was friends with the conference organizer.  So, while in Italy, I learned of things that were in my own "back yard".  I suspect many varieties have been imported over the years that we just don't know about.  I'm meeting with a fig breeder as soon as we can reschedule after he gets over his illness and I would not be the least bit surprised if he has many varieties imported that I don't know about.  Figs were easier to import until last spring.

HungryJack,apparently the only person who has access to an import license and the only person who knows the law. Why do you always focus on importing figs and then have none for sale? What are you trying to prove? Seems to me you just like to stir the pot. Or maybe set yourself up as the only legitimate fig importer so you can get future business? What a joke And yes it was you sending stupid messages to Yuku trying to start your crap there too. Time for you to get lost.

I did contact the USDA-APHIS Office in Maryland. The Post Entry Permit number that you had provided was not registered with USDA. That is what the agent that I had a lengthy conversation, told me. Again, shame on you.

Agree, never know what can find in your own backyard.
As an aside, I started getting involved with growing native plants,
aka "weeds"  for  state restoration projects.  I grow out for seed production.
Just like the weeds in the backyard  :-)
Something you might want to look into for your geographic region,
on a per acre basis it will beat most crops by a wide margin.
If the opportunity exists, its worthwhile to persue, IMO.
As the federal regulators force more fishermen out of business every year,
want something new to do,
so I will sell them weed seeds now instead !

Figs were easier to import until the recent changes,
but were never easy enough for the casual grower or hobbyist,
as evidenced by limited number of professionals willing to take on the task and expense.

When you meet with the fig breeder,
can you ask about leaf margins and striations holding true to a variety.
Also if he has experienced any genetic drift over time with propagation by cuttings,
this he should have some input on.

Thought maybe I transposed a number when I posted my permit number,
so I check, its correct.
Appreciate your thoroughness in the matter,
but I hope your fig skills are greater than your detective skills.

Not out of quarantine yet,
they are not my property,
they belong to the USDA  until they are released to me.
Feds get upset when you take their property.

I see from your comments you are a member of the fig clique,
when I first started posting on this site,
I got into a discussion about this same topic, fig naming,
with the future founder of Fig Yuku.
He had made some very valid points about fig naming
which I agreed 100% with.
Couple of days later he started another thread,
assigning some exotic name to some local fig he found.
I simply pointed out to him,
that he was doing exactly what he had commented earlier
should not be done with fig naming.  He was breaking his own
set of suggested rules.  I pointed this out, and he lost his cool,
posted numerous derogatory comments to members on this site,
and left to start his own fig forum.
Upstanding individual obviously.
So this is where all this fig clique animosity is from,
and you are one of those members.

I don't see the point of fig yuku,
there is no worthwhile activity on that website,
just a couple of members stroking each other and trying to promote
the next hot fig to buy.
The lack of activity or traction on that website bears out that fact.

Its a challenge, maybe more of a sickness :-)
I have access to large insulated walkin refridgerated boxes
that are not used during the winter months, add a small heater
on a temperature controller, and things are good.
Access to skid steers and lots of pallets make things easier,
but still a pain and an expense.

Main purpose is to grow stock,
limited amount for fruit, by also a byproduct
from stock production.
Fruit, although profitable, helps pay the other fig bills.
As a standalone mono crop business,
I doubt it could be profitable with various labor issues and costs,
labor is a bit more difficult in the NE, than the west or south,
its actually the limiting factor for many farmers,
which has caused a shift to grain in this area,
even on tiny farms compared to mid/western standards.

Not many farms in this area,
even in NJ its limited as well compared to other states.
There are a few boutique commercial small scale growers in this area
that service high end restaurants or retail at upscale farmers market servicing the locavore movement.
If they can't access the higher price points, the profit margin is too slim.
Another tough game, only getting tougher,
producing food in this country is unfashionable and unrewarded,
kind of like education :-)

*Snort!* I'm glad you don't hold that whuppin' against all of us fair skinned types, Harvey. Since this was Montana more than 40 years ago (sorry Harvey) and reasoning with such bullies was likely impossible, it would have helped to be a largish person when attempting to intimidate a couple of older and, presumably, bigger kids into leaving off from beating that kid up. I've met you, Harvey, and you aren't largish.

Direct importation from EU countries are now not allowed.
Yes, bettle/pest issues.
Limited list of countries now for importation,
potential this will change again in the coming years.
Has more to do with compliance in the foreign country, so they are in control
of the timetable.

Also, even following all the rules,
there are so many things that can and do go wrong with importations,
something as simple as a missing piece of paper can cause refusal on a shipment,
which results in a total loss off the shipment and a wasted year of time usually.
Get an infestation, and you can loose everything as well.
Get a box of cuttings and plants that got delayed in shipping,
find them all molded out, into the inspectors garbage can as well.
Not a simple task.

Is the farmers market you mentioned Dexter Farm?

Now my permit is not authentic,
really, that desperate to make a negative response again,

but certain type of farmers market or farm stands that caters to a certain clientele.
