Why some fig cutting is so expensive ???

I just don't get it? Some fig cuttings gets so expensive on eBay sometimes it's more expensive , The real fig tree?? Why? One thing I notice every time when you guys say about one type of fig everybody go crazy!!!

It's like that with anything that is collected, there are always people willing to pay too much so they have it now, when if they would wait it would become more common...

I like the Celeste..!!!  (Lets All Go Crazy over Them).....Jerval you are right, sometimes I believe its a fad. Just got some Sals Cuttings from a generous member and it was the Hottest thing out there. Anyway it is a great looking fig at a high/low price......The Black Madiera the top one will eventually fall down in price on Ebay.

Surely you realize by now lots of fig folks just aren't right in the head (present company excluded) :)

Seems to me the Black Madiera is isn't the top priced fig. All the CDD's, MF, MB are way out of reach. BM seems to be a mid priced fig now. All is really see is KK selling them now. I feel the same way about EBay. It gets really pricy at times. I have bid a lot on eBay and only won one and it was BM. I enjoy trading and will try to get the varieties I want that way. All I want now are the CDD's. That's all I got room for.

We should stay away from BM for a while and praise Black Mission or even Brown Turkey!
I feel the best figs are the ones you can grow successfully and eat them before any critter gets them.
It is supposed to be "Figs 4 Fun" and not a competetion. So, just enjoy!

Armando you're right sometimes I think prices go to crazy! I'm new to this side but I've been reading a lot ! Into beginning at Todd brown turkey was a good fig ;-) no I know there's much better fig out there

Jerval, I love the Brown Turkey, if it has a lot of sun and is watered correctly not too much, it has a great caramel flavor that I Love.

supply and demand. top tasting figs that're relatively new have very short supply due to limited number of people growing them. this raises the price point. in time, more people are growing the trees and the price comes down.

there is high expense associated with importing the new variety into US following all the legal processes, not to mention time and effort that goes into growing the variety, waiting out the quarantine, all the inspections and so on.

if you figure everything into a fig, some of the price doesn't look so bad. so, if you want the most desirable fig right now, you pay for it. otherwise, you wait. i don't mind waiting. i understand why they are so expensive.

there is no such thing as free lunch.

Its always the newbies that are willing to pay crazy prices , and when someone tries to tell them they are overpaying
they get upset and try to claim that they can afford it so its fine . But I'm sure later on when they see that same variety
is going for 10 dollars instead of the 400 dollars that they paid they understand that they were being impulsive .

John

I'm a newbies but i never will pay does crazy prices , you can call me cheap but I really work hard for my money

Looking at your list you don't have, the Black Mission. I can send you some cuttings in the Spring or sooner...(Why don't you have this rare fig..???)

Armando, I like to own a celeste. But I failed to grow them. Please don't make celeste a rarity otherwise I can't afford them!!!

Norhayati

Oh yeah Armando !! I don't have black mission!! I would love to have!!! If you can send i will love too have!!!!

Will reach over my neighbors yard and see if I can get some Missions...LOL   Will let you know if I can get some or need bail money...LOL

Anyone know how many Celeste are there,...????   Celeste, Blue Celeste, Improved Celeste, LSU Celeste....?????......also, keep this under your hat, we don't want to make these rare...LOL

Jerval, you don't need to spend top dollar for a good fig. There is a wealth of information on this forum regarding varieties, find one or two that do well in your zone and have fun.

This question has been asked many times. :)

Your comment reminds me of when I first started buying banana plants in 2005 or so and I said I would never pay more than $25 for a banana plant.  It was just crazy, I thought.  Then I paid $40 or so for one and then I saw some others that I just had to have (Ae Ae, a variegated variety).  I paid $200 for one, then $225 for one that looked even nicer, and than $200 for two more that were so large that I just had to have them.  They all died as they are very cold sensitive!!!  I paid over $200 for a large miracle fruit plant that also died for reasons I never could figure out!!!  Compared to that, what I've paid for figs (some over $200), is a bargain because they grow so easy for me and produce abundant nice fruits.

A lot of people like to blame the evil banks and Wall Street for the financial collapse of 2008.  What about all the craziness of home buyers? This frenzy resulted in prices that went way beyond reason, especially in some areas.  Just the fact that prices were seemingly continually going up lead folks to bid even higher.

If someone can afford such a discretionary purchase and they see a fig they really want, I see no reason to fault them for paying a high price.  It can give a lifetime of pleasure.  For people that paying high prices would cause a financial burden, they should wait and enjoy photos and wait until prices come down.

Now, if you think figs are crazy, how about tulips???  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania

At the peak of tulip mania, in March 1637, some single tulip bulbs sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman.

Agree 100%

Curious, what vendor/seller on Ebay has  legally imported figs stock from overseas ?

Yes, that craziness has invade Malaysians too. Some of us paid so much for just a common cutting. Since fig growing is very very new in Malaysia and supply is very little compared to demand, fig sellers are selling cuttings from as little as RM30 to a high of RM90. Of course when we convert to USD it is only USD 10 to 30. But RM30 can be your gas money for 5 days.
I am hoping this will end soon so that everyone can afford to have a fig tree..

i'm sure most of those ebay sellers, other than few that we know imported things into US using proper papers, are selling them second hand, and some just plain lie about the cuttings they are selling.

still, the demand is there and those sellers know that some will go out of their way to get the latest and greatest. like the latest air jordon sneaker..

Once you count soil and pots and irrigatiopn plastics its to much for 100 trees that i gro
So i save the money if i can...

Just yesterday a cool forum member from canada blessed me with some cuttings so generosity of forum members contributes to the effort

when i first joined this forum, i was very new to figs. i still am very new to figs and do not know much at all. i never traded anything before, and i noticed people trading all the time. i only had 3 trees that i paid for from east coast figs. at first, my trees weren't old enough to trade cuttings and i didn't know what i had. i mean, i knew the names of the figs, but what was it worth? would it be good enough to trade.

i was just going to grow those 3 trees and be done with it.

then my trees started growing and i had cuttings available at the end of the yr. i asked for trade. for whatever reason, Kathleen's Black was relatively popular back then. so lot of generous forum members were willing to trade with me with more desirable cuttings. my rooting skills improved, and i also started growing USDA/UCD figs.

after being on the forum for awhile and participating and discussing my findings, some forum members were generous enough to send me few new figs to try in my area. most of these figs are now known to be very good figs.

with weather in NC, most of figs will do well. some of the more FMV loaded figs from USAD/UCD have no problem what so ever here.

what i'm saying is.. don't rush into getting everything under the sun. have fun and enjoy growing figs. if you stay on this forum long enough and show that you are willing to be a part of this community, people will share with you. to me, growing fig is more of a luxury, it's one of the "fun" part of my life and this forum is great way to share my experience and problems when it comes to figs.

Most highly sought after items go this way, look at NIKON lens, wide format cameras, VW bugs from the 40s and 50s, each hobby has its set of items that cause people to go wild in an auction format.  I find ebay is handy for checking the true price of common things I need for projects, I also notice a large amount of retail flipping, many times the lowest cost can be found elsewhere or by sorting by lowest price on ebay and seeing what stacks up.

Sure some of the prices are crazy at times, but at least it is for something that is REAL and produces food. People pay far more outrageous sums for things like beanie babies.
