Will attempt grafts again, is Fall OK to start a few.

With the temperatures soon to drop, do you guys think or know if Fall is good for my location. The temperatures should drop to 80's very soon.  Note: lost a lot of my grafts to RKN and the outdoor grafts got overheated and died.

Well, you can try and report to us... you should have some nice root stock arriving at your door soon!

you should "solarize the area where the problems were".   take all the soil, cover with a black plastic and let it cook under your CA sun... it should kill them.  turn the soil in a few days and let it cook up some more.

Armando,

As Grasa says one can always try.
Have a look in these guidelines,

http://articulos.infojardin.com/arboles/injertos-de-yema.htm

Around here the majority do 'patch budding' - *injerto de parche* and they are happy even if done late Summer, early autumn. In 2 or 3 weeks you see easily if it takes or not.. but it will only shoot out on next spring.
There is a special knife (you can make one!) for the top/bottom parallel cuts which have to be exactly the same (distance in between) in scion and root stock... do 3 or 4 practising on wild figs.. It's easy!
(cambium to cambium always!!)

For grafting, I would wait until Jan/February and use either cleft or 'whip and tongue'
W&T looks difficult but it's not..and Very efficient .. try on wilds first..
Would avoid saddle for limited mech.strength

good luck
Francisco

Grafting is best done when the plant is actively growing. You need sap flow to induce healing at the graft union.

Thank You everyone for your input.....Grasa thanks for the cuttings they look great......Francisco thanks for the info, will try chip grafting.......Thank Jon, didn't know that. I thought I grafted a dormant Preto onto a dormant rootstock.

You can graft when dormant, but you have the problem of keeping the scion and the "joint" from drying out till it breaks dormancy.
