winter airlayer

I thinking of trying to air layer a potted fig in the house that is still pushing growth. Will this work

Dave - I layered a small Sal's Corleone completely inside the house in the spring last year.  It worked out great!  She grew to 5 feet and started putting on figs by the end of the summer.

Great to here I got a Nero 600 that I had to baby all year as a cutting. Almost list it several times. Finally she's doing great and has strong roots in a 5 gal pot. Wouldn't mind a second one.

Looks great!!! Excellent job.

Wow, looks super, great growing,

What if the tree is dormant?

Dave, I am going to do one also. It's small, but it I have faith it will work. As long as you have green leaves harvesting energy, they should do a good job at powering that great root growth. The beauty with a layer is you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I hear that Calvin. My Nero has three branches one is a green sucker a little over a foot tall. Think he is the one IM going after.

Scott IM not sure bud but I think of dormant air layer may not work as it's not pushing new growth.

Hi COGardner,
If the tree is dormant no roots will appear.
For winterizing I do fill trashcans with potting soil from the nurseries around my trees.
And none does grow roots in the potting soil. They stay like that from mid November to mid March . So that's more than enough of time.
But if I do that in June, in 2 months I  get roots that allow me to remove the airlayers as full trees.
So the figtrees need to be growing to be able to root - at least in my experience .

Here we go. One on a Nero and one on a condria. See how it goes in about a month

Good luck bro. Hope it goes well. I cut the leaves off and treated the cut area with a gel rooting hormone. Never tried to do an air layer on a pottedplant in winter. Guess this is how we learn. The clam shell airlayer pots I think I got from park seed co. They are the medium size.

Nice job, Dave.  What are the air-layer pots called?  Can't find them on the website.

Here are some. Not the same place I got mine though.
