Winter Indoor Fig Growth

I thought I'd share some pictures of my first year over wintering figs indoors. I was hoping to get an additional summer of growth off of them. I have had to deal with a lot of pests, from fungas gnats to spider mites, but most are going strong.

Recieved this RdB at the end of September:

Here it is today along with an RdB I rooted around the same time:

They have been a steady grower, only pausing when the spider mites got bad. They are in 5g SIPs and require water twice a week.

The next one is a black madeira. I can't find a pic of the original from September, but here's a pic of another BM I got at the same time that didn't make it, but was the same size:

It grew very little until last month and then exploded in new growth:

I have a bunch of other cuttings growing for fun. I've tried a few different methods of rooting and cup potting. All have worked about the same. I still lose the occassional cutting in the cups for unknown reasons, especially my Sodus Sicilians, which were extremely hard to get past the cup stage.

Nick

nick,

is that pix of BM in the box one that i sent? one you won in the contest? if so, can you let me know how it died? i heard BM dying without a reason. just want to see if there was specific reason. the cuttings that i rooted at the same time are all growing, not as fast as that one did. i noticed how i pack my plants.

That's some amazing indoor growth!

Hey Pete!

Yeah that was the one I won in the auction. My best guess as to why it died was that I left all the figs on it when I brought it inside. The figs just never ripened and my best guess is the young tree just didn't have enough energy to handle all the figs. Lesson learned, I won't try to ripen figs indoors anymore! So far it's the only tree I've lost in the house,

yeah.. that one had good number of figs on it. i started knocking figs off my BM soon after sending you that tree. i heard trees suffering after putting on too much figs then it can handle.. but didn't expect it to die. sorry about it.

No problem, it happens! Hopefully, others will learn from my mistake.
