Winter is finally here

  • jtp

Well, I guess it had to happen eventually. Winter is here in coastal NC. Tonight and tomorrow night, we are supposed to get a hard freeze (into the teens with the wind chill). Tarping on the patio was not going to cut it this time.

That said, I spent a good part of today moving more pots than I recalled having planted into the garage for the winter. In addition to the figs were potted pomegranates, mulberries, hops, turmeric, bougainvillea and a newly-acquired lemon. And yet, I am already planning for more next year, with cuttings and baby plants all over my house. Such is the addiction.

In addition to the great fig transfer, I had to construct a cage of chicken wire over and around the plants, so that my cats would not turn them into a giant litter box over the next several months. At least, the dreaded task is finally completed.

Of course the winter is here with 25+ cm of snow (close to a foot) followed by freezing rain and then temperature going above freezing creating perfect condition to turn your car moving forward like a boat requiring steering like a boat. But no one is noticing it here as if it is a daily thing. A friend felt pain in the chest after shoveling snow and now he has stent in the heart arteries. There will be more snow and slush like this eventually leading us back to the fig season with green shoots putting smile on the face an later heavenly taste in the mouth. Every snow and slush brings us closer to that moment.
I hope all of us see that moment in good healrh.

Calling for 30 here.   If we get a frost that should make the pom cuttings head your way soon.

Yep!  Although we never get snow, we do get ice on the golf course early AM.  The figs don't seem to mind because of that sun that warms them so gently!  Clouds are rolling in for some reason.........  Will they drop snow?  Nope, but maybe a rainbow!

Low to mid 20's here with the wind still blowing. Makes it feel like the season.

It came on rather suddenly. It was in the 70s during the week. I had new growth sprouting on some figs.

i moved my containers sometime ago. i think i moved it back in Nov. didn't see any reason to keep them outside. i think it was right before the temp dropped below 40. it's been over 30 yrs since i moved down here from NYC, and i'm still not used to NC winter.
