Winter Prep Underway

Steve,
i understand your shed is like mine , i have plywood side and a shingle roof. I dont have room though to store in there as all the patio stuff along with mowers and things go in it for the winter. The idea did cross my mind though of building or buying some sort of structure that could house the tree's but it would have to be big and heated as well something i really dont want to do at this point, oh well. Also i did get the single strip grow light  and have small plant directly under it , they have to be right under it as advised around 4 inches to be most effective if useing the high output flourescent 6500k which i use so i can only put a certain amoount of plant under it but it works well for me so far.
Good Luck
Martin

When nobody was looking, I emptied alot of junk out of the shed to make room for the figs. A guy must have his priorites! BTW, I bought the 4 bulb model and it had similar instructions on keeping it close to the plants. So I have a new project for christmas week to rig up something to put my cuttings under.

Steve the four bulb model , your going to like that one!
The 1 bulb model i have with the reflector i bought with it seems to do well i had it up and going now probably since late October i believe and the small plants seem to like it there not going dormant and putting on some leaves for next season. So after this winter i dont see me useing it anymore for fig plants but im thinking of gettng head start maybe with a few vegtable plants. Your 4 bulb one is a great one to have.

The one issue I see is that the only good place I have to set this up is in my basement. The basement tends to be very dry in the winter when the heat is running (forced hot air). The RH is low around 30. THis is too low for the figs so adding humidity is the problem. The lights might make it a little drier for the figs. I do not want to use a humidifier for the basement so I was thinking a daily misting with water might do the trick. I'll have to try it out and see how it goes.

A little update on my insulated shed with the space heater. The heater is set to kick-on at around 35F. I have yet to see the shed drop below that temp yet. This past week with the cold spell, it never dipped below 30F even though we have been in single digit temps all week and it was -5F this morning. The humidity has varied but is in acceptable ranges (similar to household). The figs look great even though they are sleeping. Boy, I can't wait for spring.

Steve, you did great job with shed.
We had below zero temps the last couple nights outdoors with 18 below one night and the high for that day was 3 below, garage temp held at 8 above zero
next night was about 22 below as surrounding towns were all minus 20 something and one town about 30 miles away hit 33 below zero, garage temp held again at 8 we did not use the car in garage so door stood closed. Well now we have a warm spell it hit 20 above garage temps are slowly climbing and its 30 in garage had door open several times, humidity i dont monitor. This is first year i watched the temps in garage where some tree's are stored and its been a little colder this winter than some of the past ones it seems.
Yes look forward to SPRING!

Martin,
Stay warm! You guys usually get much colder than I do. The -5F is about as cold as it gets here (not counting the wind chill). I bet you regret buying that thermometer - it has added to your stress level I'm sure. I bet your figs will be fine. BTW - One of the Unknowns is growing like a weed and is about 18" tall already (see attached). Not bad for a little over 3 months since it rooted.
