Winter Slowly Slipping Away

Well i think winter is finally easing up here somewhat, temps forcast for the 30s this and next week with an occasional 40 something. Days are getting longer and my attached garage temps are starting to finally climb more than a 10 to 15 degree difference from the outdoors temps. As i type its 27 out and garage tem is 47 balmy degree's !!!
The poor trees can start to defrost there containers unless of course.........

I understand your impatience with winter, and the approach of spring.  But things are starting to break loose around here, too.  Tree buds are swelling some, spring bulbs are peeking out, migratory birds are on the move.  I saw several flocks of geese this week, heading  back north for the summer.  60s tomorrow in the forecast before a dip back into the 30s with some rain/snow mix.  Sigh.
But it is raining here today, (raining fig cuttings, that is) as I received several cuttings in the mail from various sources.  So I'll start rooting those soon, too.  I plan on trying some of the different recommended methods utilizing the info gleaned from several of you wise & experienced fig growers/fig lovers.
By the way, spring really is just around the corner, as the vernal equinox is March 20 for this year.  Spring is T minus 25 days and counting...

Take Care

Cecil
coming from my area and to hear someone is getting bud, has leaves , breba starting thats fantastic.

Yep Martin,

But remember, we also have the *^&%^*() Gophers & RKN.

It is not Fig Paradise here, but I will struggle along right here ;-)

Yeah i know each area has there drawbacks , hurricanes, earthquakes, too hot , too cold too much snow etc, etc.
I dont know about the RKN stuff, but i just could imagine sitting on porch once in a while with 22 and scope having target practice to pass some time along with watching the fig trees grow of course.
I know if them wabitts start to try and find a new way in since we had a new chainlink put up so far so good im going to turn loose 3 wabitt chasing dogs on em and if they keep coming back i have a lot of buckshot for em, after all my relatives use to say they dont taste too bad.

The Rabbits around here taste just like Chicken!

Well, those several flocks of geese that heirloom saw this week heading north for the summer, reached here and turned back. 'Still too cold' they said.
It is close to zero F. The figs are going to have a real rest for two more months.

Ottawan
if it helps it still gets in the single digits here at night, but recovers a little better during the more sunnny days we are getting now as the season moves along, i know its cold though at night as i long for the time i can spend outdoors on the patio and complain about the heat again when i do some weeding in the garden.
Im serioulsy thinking about putting down some stuff they call Preen before the weeds come up as per direction when i use the tiller machine i tired of getting bit by the mosquitos and dodging them darn yellow jackets there when in the veggie garden.
Ottawan we have a lot of geese here they seem to stay all year as we have a lot of retention ponds along wita few small lakes, as of late they have taken to the air getting there excersise. But the small birds i have yet to hear yet thats when i know spring is real close.

Yesterday was fairly nice for this time of year in NJ. Nice and sunny and in the 30's. Today is going to be a mess ... they are forecasting 6-10 inches of snow tonight through tomorrow. I was just starting to put together my spring to-do list. I guess I'll put that aside for now.

Ciao Martin,  The little birds are back now.  Last year a family made a nest in the awning of our house and they left after their babies flew away, now they are back chirping away and rebuilding their house from last year.  I was told by old timer Pennsylvanians, that these birds go to California after their babies leave and then they come back east in the spring to do it all over again and in the same nest provided it is still their.  I loved watching them and the babies growing.  These birds are way to small to eat any figs, so they are welcome to live where they are.

Hi Cecil, haven't seen you around in a while.  Did you go to Holiday this winter?  Or maybe I haven't been popping in as much?

Ciao,  Mag

Hi Maggie,

No, I have just stayed kinda quite (for a change ;-) )

I find, I don't get in as much trouble that way HEHE !

I monitor this Forum & GW/FF all the time though.

I sent the GW/FF an email yesterday asking to be reinstated in June

Don't know what is going to happen on that one.

The best regards (BTW how is the new Mom to be doing?   Great I hope.

Its going to be 25 today 32 the next day. Yesterday i wwent and bought some more pots i need them, 4 of them large 24 inch which were more expensive as there better than the ones i have in shape and thickness and not as fluted at the top which makes them easier to get on the hand truck to move around like i do with them certain times of the year,  4 - 16 inch pots and 3 smaller square ones. Soon i have to prune the 4 large tres still asleep in garage as the weather sloooowly turns warmer and they will want to awake. I think this winter was the worst for them yet as we had some spells of real cold i dont remember getting to 21 below in last 5 or 6 seasons and some nights 15 below plus and thats when it was real cold in garage as well according to the gauge i bought and my ears and nose also telling me .

Cecil  uncheck the invisible feature and join in the chat, nice weather is coming and i look forward to pictures of your trees you planted last year!
Good luck to you on that other forum, you just might have to tape some of your fingers together once in a while if and when they let you chat there again so Best to You!                         ; )

Ciao Cecil,  thanks for asking about the new mom to be.  I am okay,  I am getting big,  my husband is tall and muscular and i think His genes are going through.  I  am tall, 5 foot 10 but I think its going to be a big boy like his daddy, I am fat, fat, fat,  I will be okay,  but I crave alot of things and I am very moody.  I am glad you and I  don't argue now like we used too,  I would be a real witch now!!!   god bless and thanks, your the only one who asked me how I was doing with the pregnancy. Ciao.  Maggi

Maggie,
Shame on all of us that we have not checked in with you. I am glad to hear all is going well. BTW, when my wife was pregnant with each of my 3 boys, she never looked so beautiful - I am sure you look great. Best of luck to you and your (growing) family.
