Winter storage question.

I have some 1 year old potted fig trees that I need to store for the winter. Two options:

A: my basement which is 61 degrees

B: my unheated-detached garage. No insulation. It's pretty much a shed.

Any suggestions are helpful.

I was thinking of building an insulated box for my garage...

One year old figs are still very cold tender.  I would try one of these options;

- create a cooler area in your basement to keep under 50F (cold room)?
- Or if you can create a protected area/greenhouse inside your garage to keep the temp around 40F?  (a tent with a heat lamp/thermostat or similar)
-  or just keep growing them in a bright sunny window or artificial lights and then harden them in the spring before bringing outside.

I had no problem overwintering first year figs last year in my unheated shed.  On several occasions the temps got down to the low 20's F and I had no cold damage whatsoever.  On a few nights I provided heat via an electric radiator to keep it from getting colder than 22 deg F or so.

There's no electricity in my garage. Maybe I can just pull some blankets on top of them?

I strung a power cord from an electrical outlet on the side of my house.  You have to make sure that the cord is rated for this application though or you might have a fire.  There is a thread from late Fall 2013 that was started by me that discusses all these issues.  Blankets would help too but I have too many figs and not enough blankets.

Here's the thread:

It's shocking that last year the really cold weather didn't arrive until Dec. 31 whereas this year it arrived around Nov. 17!

Our potted trees saw a low of 19f last year in our garage in Fair Lawn NJ. No real issues. They grew like weeds this year and we had abundant fruit from our Battaglia, Negronne and Red Greek.

Hey Rich
Could you possibly post a pic of your Greek red at Your convince of course. Never seen one. Thanks in advance !
My potted figs did great in unheated shed last, very cold for our area, winter with temps in the twenties and I only lost my Lsu purple in ground which is trying to come back. The four inground Celeste no problems!

great looking fig Rich.
i only wish i could help with the name.
the one you gave it sounds good though ;-)

Well Rich my friend this is an awesome looking tree! very nice figs. The outside looks like the Olympian that I only know from pics but the inside resembles something between Paradiso and brunswick! I grew up in Athens Greece but never saw or tasted those babies! Great find! Thanks again very much for sharing the pics and the story! By the way the name sounds cool too. Well done bud!

Thanks,
This is my wife's favorite fig.
Its from Kardamyli on the Peloponisiau peninsula.
We have shown it to many people from Greece and no one has a name. I sold one to a Greek woman at the Statan Island Fig Festival who seemed to know it. She Got really excited when I showed her the pictures.

Hey Rich! Love the fig and the story behind it! I keep going back to the pics trying to figure out the variety! I think it is the very first pic that shows the whole pot and plant, and the one of the lower leaves on the left that resembles my negronne leaf, almost identical! What an awesome job you are doing and not just with your figs! The tomatoes look great and is that Italian sausage you were making? Put me down for 20 lbs lol! Very neat stuff buddy , well done! Are the green figs Stella or vasilika? My wife loved the website too! If you come up with any extra cuttings or a plant of the Kali red Greek let me know please, very interested! I also understand that the waiting list is probably 10 miles long lol! Have a great night filoi mou(my friends in greek)!

Green figs are Battaglia from Bill M and we will have cuttings and plants from the red greek available soon.

I hope this is okay to say.  I think it is Rich in NJ and not Richie..  I haven't seen anyone decide to refer to him as Richie.  It may be okay but I would ask before I took it upon myself to use a different name.  I sure hope I don't get banned or scorned for this but I don't appreciate people assuming they can make up there own salutation for someone.  I will duck and run if needed and then apologize if needed.

Nice looking figs too(the Bataglia) .
Sounds good! Let me know. Thanks Rich.

Thanks for this.

I prefer Rich or Richard.

My apologies to You both. No offense intended!
