wintering figs

I lost 45 figs in my root cellar from too much humidity, the good thing is I only lost 2 of last summers seedlings.200 figs in cellar and 70 seedlings. Rex.

Sorry you lost so many.

So I guess from what you said is the reason for your losses I should reconsider my plans to winter my new plants in my pump house.   I would of never thought humidity would be a problem with dormant plants in cold weather.  Oh well I know nothing.

What makes you sure it was humidity and not some other factor.
My cellar is has enough humidity causing sources such as many pots with moist soil not requiring watering at all during the winter. The moisture drops in the cellar freeze on the ceiling during mid winter and temperature stays around 9C to 13C during storage period. I don't recall losing any plant when storing in this cellar.
I did lose this year five or six  plants in the garage though (like 5%). It may be due to cold spots in the garage that needs to be taken care off (insulation).

I should say that I put hay over my figs to keep them warm, what I got was moldy hay and figs. the figs that were  not under the hay were fine. So as long as you dont put hay in the pump house you should be fine. I had 3 or 4 of each kind of fig so I am ok on figs. The figs  that died were  florea, sals cor, and Brown turky and celeste .

O.K. now I'm back to thinking pump house all the way.  I live in zone 7 and wasn't planning to do anything to them except put them in the pump house.  No covering of any type.  I should think they should be fine there if dormant when I put them in.

I do have a question for those of you who store plants though, are the plants o.k. in the dark all winter or should they have some light.

thanks

As long as they're dormant, they don't need any light whatsoever.  They're sleeping.

Thanks Frank,  I thought that was so but thought I should make sure.

I just looked in the root cellar and the figs look good, no mold, nice green buds, even a few extra cuttings in cups I put in cellar look good,Rex.

How did the pump house work out?

Pump house worked great.  Like an idiot I took them out about 3 days before the cold came back again.  I did nothing to them all winter just left them alone in the pump house did not even look at them for like 3 months or more.  When I took them out some had yellow leaves and yellow figs on them already.  Took them out and set them in the shade under some trees although not much shade as the leaves are not made yet on the trees.  Gave them some water and I think it was 1 or 2 days later the cold night came I seen 28 on my thermometer.  I just got back in today after having to be away for 2 days and the leaves are greening nicely and all seem to be quite healthy.  No fig shuffle here.  Well not much of one I did put them up and then took them out.  I had pomegranates stored with them and they all seem to of done well to with little leaves on them too.
