Wisconsin

Hi, my wife loves figs and I wanted to suprise her with a tree, we live in wisconsin so I was thinking it probably have to be an inside tree and I was looking for suggestions on a tree that produces good fruit but didn't get taller than 7 1/2 feet. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think Black jack is a dwaft tree, or just keep it pruned down.

I think Negronne is a dwarf  tree also.

You might try Hardy Chicago. Lowe's was carrying them last week at $10/ea. It should survive outside. Read this forum for  how to winterize. If you grow in pots, you can always trim to size.

You can prune any fig tree to be the size and shape you want.

From what I have read elsewhere on this forum there may not be dwarf fig trees per se but rather varieties that grow more slowly than others.  Samhain, I'm not sure what you mean by "inside tree" but just keep in mind that to produce figs you will need your tree to get several hours of full sun per day.  During the dormant season the tree should be protected from the cold.  In your case that would likely mean growing in a container and storing in an unheated garage.

I haven't heard much that's positive about the taste of Black Jack.  If it's going to be a potted tree you could always keep it pruned to the size you want since most figs produce on the current year's growth.  In my mind there's nothing wrong with the more common figs available at online nurseries: Hardy Chicago, Improved Celeste, Stella, Atreano, etc.  Petals from the Past has been a good nursery for me.  Good prices, reasonable shipping, nice well-rooted 1 gallon plants.

Hello Samhain69,

Welcome. Be aware that some varieties of fig plants smell like cat pee. I do not know which varieties, but I can testify to it.

You should also look for an ever bearing variety for a longer fruiting period.

I agree with timclymer's post. I have ordered from Petals from the Past also, A-plus rating all around. I ordered plants in May of this year and have tasted fruit from all fig varieties. The Brown Turkey (English or Eastern Brown Turkey) and O'Rourke are very prolific. The EBT is also cold hardy and it has smaller leaves and may make a better small plant.

Good luck

It is very difficult to get figs to produce indoors, unless you have a greenhouse or provide very strong artificial light. Then the taste may not be at it's best either. Your best bet is to do what most of us do, grow it outdoors in the warm weather and bring it indoors in fall. Once your tree drops it's leaves in the fall, you can store it in a cool garage or basement. No need to provide light as long as it remains dormant. If you bring it indoors and grow it through the winter, give it the sunniest window you have. Even if it does not produce fruit indoors it can put on some growth

Thanks everyone for your help, I've looked into it more and I think I'd like the Negronne. Anyone know where I might locate one? I don't want to order online and I've tried using a search engine but not having much luck.

I found mine at a local nursery - you might start by calling your locals . Mine is very young or I'd offer you cuttings.
