Wish List Confusion

Back in June, there was a post for the 6 figs on your wish list.  I had posted 11, and a member replied that 4 of them were paradiso.

I checked Encanto Farms varietal page and did not find the names of the 4 paradiso figs.

I would like to put a list together that makes sense and will not embarrass myself with my ignorance.

To further show my ignorance on figs and their naming - what the heck does paradiso refer to?  How would I know a paradiso by it's name if paradiso is not in it's name?  Are there others (I'm sure there are!) I will show my ignorance with if I put them on my wish list?

My goals at the moment is to:
1. have a variety of figs.
2. extend my fig eating season.
3. have a fig hedge - although it will be short in length.

I may have to modify my goals as time goes on, but this is what I would like to do.

of all the fig names you could have asked about...

There was a discussion in the GardenWeb site about 'Paradiso'.  Since there is not anyone who is policing the names given to figs (and a bunch of people who feel like their fig is "Paradise") several different varieties were named 'Paradiso'.  This discussion ruffled some people's feathers and caused others to puff out their chest, etc.  Basically, it is as if you went to another area where they gave you chocolate ice cream but in their region it is called it vanilla.  Then someone else came and gave you butter pecan and they also called it vanilla.  You'd have three different bowls of vanilla ice cream.  Which is the correct vanilla ice cream?

James - thank you so much for clarifying things!   Now instead of it being clear as mud, it's as clear as uh...... fig jam!!

Out of the 11 on my list, only one had Paradiso in it's name!

Oh - what is an ignorant to the names of figs, lover of figs to do?

Maybe I'll just propagate more of the one I have.  Then, I won't have to worry about names!  But then, I will be missing out on the other wonderful figs that are out there.

Decisions decisions with confusing information to go by.......it's an adventure in my own backyard!

OK JoAnn, I will attempt to list the following Paradiso's :

Paradiso  "Dusan"
Paradiso  "Gene"
Paradiso  "Morle"
Paradiso   Bronze
Paradiso   Bianco
Paradiso   Nero

Paradiso "Dusan" is excellent here(Canada). Many good feedbacks on Paradiso "Gene" & so too for Paradiso Bronze. I am not sure whether Paradiso Bronze & Dusan are the same.

Interestingly Adriano(Canada) has 2 variants of Paradiso ---- Bianco & Nero. Adriano describe the Bianco as a green fig. Whether this is similar to Gene's variant or not, I have no idea. There is a good chance these figs are just names assigned to them and I would not be surprise they may be duplicates. I have sampled Paradiso "Dusan" and I can say it is a very nice fig.

I assume the LSU varieties are not paradisio, so here are the others that were on that list -
Violette de Bordeaux
Desert King
White Paradisio
Conadria
Excel
Golden Atreano
Texas Everbearing

The LSU varieties are:
Purple - have it!
Golden
Tiger
Scott's Black
O'Rourke

I don't remember why I had these on the list but here they are.  Which ones are Paradisio and what is the significance of the name if there is any.  Does it mean they are all the same fig with different names?

Thanks for the help

I have one fig named Paridiso, but I don't think it's Paridisio.  Could be, not sure.  I guess I'll have to wait till figs happen to see what I've got.  Might be Bronze.  Got it from a member, but the tag was missing.  He thinks it's slipped into the pot somewhere.  Too hot to go out and check, so I'll remain confused too, for the moment.

You left out Giovanni's Paradiso. Not unless it's the same as one of the others. I have it and also Joe Morle Paridiso. Morle fig is a brunswick.

Forget about figuring out exact names - they don't make enough sense to lose sleep over. ;) Collect a number of figs with different-sounding names, grow them in big pots along a sunny fence, wait till they bear fruit, taste them, then give away the ones that don't grow as well, or that you don't like as much.

Joann, after a while you will discover that the more you learn, the less you know. You move from "there are figs" (the fig newton stage) to "wow, there is more than one kind of fig?" (that moment of epiphany) to "what are caprifigs, and breba figs, and is green-this really the same as white-that" (the I want it all to be neat and tidy stage) to "it tastes good and I am good with that" (the comfortable place where you enjoy and learn and are at peace).

Ah yes.  The many stages of madness.

I understand and am fine with it.  BUT.......

I'll leave it at that.

Thank you.
