witch fingers grape

Hi
I have seen discussion about witch finger grape...
I am locking for it. I want to come over a few plants.
Anyone have an idea?

You can call me grape variety collector.
If anyone are qurious, my webbshop are http://www.Vinplantan.se (not english).../Lennart

I have tried to get these but they are not for sale on the retail market yet. If you find any I'd love a PM.
thx,
mgg

same here and look for cotton candy as well. right now IFG won't let anyone within 100 ft of the plants unless you sign a contract with them. the plants are patented in IFG's name but the grapery is there #1 grower here in the states. If you can find someone that works in the fields at the grapery you might stand a chance on getting some cuttings. The I in IFG is for international and they have been pushing growers overseas to also grow there crops. so if you can find a grower in Spain or indonesia they may be willing to trade you for something they don't have. So far all the doors that have opened for me have been shut as soon as I mention cuttings so maybe someone can sweet talk them out of a few. Good luck.

So re: whitch fingers......
I have bought seeds from china instead.

Out of 100 seeds I calculate about 5 correct plants, rest will be som kind of hybrids. In 3-4 years we will know.

I have also found 4-5 other finger grapes....same procedure.

Have you guys considered using tissue culture to clone from the grape stems?

no.........please explicate /Lennart

Lennart, I've never done tissue culture myself, but the basic principal is to grow plant cells in a sterile nutrient solution containing plant hormones that cause the cells to grow into an undifferentiated mass of callus cells.  These cells multiply and are then often divided to produce many callus lumps.  These are then differentiated into small plants using other plant hormones.  They sell kits to do this at home.  http://kitchenculturekit.com/home.aspx  They aren't cheap and you'll need good sterile technique.  Here's a bit more information from Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plant_tissue_culture

Also, here's an old article that indicates that grapes can be grown in tissue culture from cells originating in the stem.  Since grapes are sold with the stem intact perhaps you could have some luck creating a clone with those stems.  http://www.plantphysiol.org/content/37/3/387.full.pdf  But if you think you can get them from seeds that might be easier if you're not comfortable with the tissue culture method.

Pretty weird looking. How do they taste?

Looks like plenty of stem comes with the bunches for tissue culturing.

Pretty awesome but how do they taste? I'll tissue culture them if I can find them locally and they will grow in our zone and taste better than what we have now which is Relics Mars and Marquis

In general grapes with that shape are referred to as "lady finger" grapes. If I remember correctly the usda has several types. A quick search brought up a few, I'm sure if you dug in you could find several.

Interesting...seems to take some of the mystery out of them.

Yikes!

I had a chance to eat a bag full of them while I was in SanFrancisco this fall. The exact variety and brand that Rich has posted from Grapery. It is super sweet, very sugary and high water content. The skin is thin. This is a new cultivar and is available only in supermarkets and I do not think the culture is for sale in nurseries for homeor personal use.

Again, witch finger grapes are very different looking than ladies figer grapes. they are not mare than an inch long and are less than half inch in diameter.

So I've been falling asleep to these great YouTube videos from BBC gardening programs...
...gotta keep the cabin fever at bay!
These are inspiring, well-shot, and informative.
LooneyPrepper and CactusBumm have posted a lot of these videos. Highly recommend them!

Anyway, a couple of nights ago I saw something that some may find interesting.
Maybe this offers some clue as to the origins of this grape, maybe some parentage, or a similar variety that may be easier to acquire:

Check out the grapes at 17:30.

By the way, there's something neat that only forum members would likely notice at 13:20 :)

If I was a fortune teller, I would say someone is going to take a trip to the Mediterranean for some cuttings.

Here is a list of places to buy these grapes

may not have to go there. This procedure is right up our alley.

the link is suppose to take you to a demonstration of rooting the stem pieces you get when you buy a bunch of grapes.

I'm sure they will eventually make there way here. Just takes awhile to set up US patons, negotiate with specified nurseries and raise enough stock to sell.

It's like when I first saw the Red Love apple, I've been in contact with every distributor, no one exports to the US. I'm in contact with Marcus at Lubera, the breeder, they are working hard to get their trees into the US, it's been over 3 years since i first talked to him and still nothing.

I'm holding a spot for one.   Some day:)

Is it illegal to propagate and resell these varieties?

On the Grapery's website it says that they are patented, so selling the plants would be illegal in whichever countries they have patents in without their permission.
