Woke Up To This Today

AKA "Screw You zones 8-10!" I cannot express to you how OVER the snow I am. Prob got 5" last night. Over the next two weeks we are supposed to get 2 days that just hit 60 degrees, with rain of course so we don't get too comfortable. This sucks! Spring Where Are You???

My babies are cozy in the hoop house at least. They will be ready whenever the warm weather decides to show up.

That sucks!  I hope it melts away super fast Aaron.

They look cozy and warm in the hoop house at least. Sucks about the snow. I'm also ready for warmer weather.

Well its allready hot and i am complaining about the heat. I should be grateful. Your area looks beautiful snow and, all. Your figs look gappy in there house

Living in the extreme drought region of So Cal, I'd gladly trade our dry 70s-80s March for your cold wet one.

Today I'll be nearly stumping my 30 y/o hass avocado tree, to wait it out.  My three big coastal redwoods, might suffer a similar fate.

Toast your weather, it's a blessing!

Cheers,

I don't think so. You can add water. I can't add warmth and sunshine. I'm a landscaper, if it does not warm up, I can't go to work.

The thing I love about Southern California is that we can drive one or two hours in random directions and be in the snow or on the beach, so all these lovely things are in our reach.

We are in the middle of a drought here.  I think they say California has one year of water left.  NOT good.  We would love some of your snow in our high mountains so it can melt into the rivers!  We really can't add water or we get fined.  Sorry the snow impacts your job as a landscaper.  It will be warm soon for sure!

Wish I could add water.   Our tap water is too salty for avocados (a good reason for figs).  My reverse osmosis system (ROS) loses 5 gallons for every one salt free, I did use it last year.  However now, I can't use ROS in good conscience since lake cachuma (our water source) is at about 25% capacity during our current "rainy season."  We in Santa Barbara have already cut our water usage 22%, even so NASA says California will be out of water in one year.  I assume this refers to the big cities L.A. etc.

Still it must really suck not being able to earn.   Sorry 'bout that.

WOW... Absolutely stunning. I love your set up.

I got 4 inches last night.  Very frustrated...

Aaron, That looks beautiful.
In few days the snow will all be gone and just a distant dream for you.

I am amazed that you can keep your hoop house warm enough for those babies.  What kind of heat have you got?

My heat source is just a simple $30 electric heater with built in thermostat. I just set it to medium. It only has to heat 150 sq ft.

We rarely have water restrictions but it does occasionally happen. Even in the worst conditions we can use drip systems because of the efficiency of the water usage. Very little is lost to evaporation.
However if the water is too salty, there is little you can do about it.

When is CA going to start building desalination plants?  If they run out of fresh water people will leave (and tax revenue will fall) and it will be too late.  They should probably kick that delta smelt to curb as well and starting using that water.  Sorry, as much as I like animals, human life and livelihood take precedence in my book.

Santa Barbara (ca) built a desalination plant during the last drought, then some idiot politicians sold off components.  Now we are rebuilding it, for about 60 million, if I recall correctly.  It wont be nearly big enough for all our needs, but it's a start.

Sorry about the snow Aaron! I woke up to a totally different day here in GA and it seams like spring is here to stay. We're enjoying nice mild temps and the occasional rain shower this past week so no complaints! I hope it warms up soon for you folks also so you can go back to work. Hang in there!

adelmanto, you need to add a center spine support to your green house and that would of helped support the snow load. good luck

to people in hot dry areas, look up permaculture, chop and drop. its more work at first to set up then less later and better results than with chemicals and healthier. imo
we have three months of dry weather here in the summer.  i have a few trees that are too far from a water source so i heaped hay from goat barns, clippings and chips.  we rarely water these trees and the layers held in moisture.  these trees are some of the thickest trunks i have compared to the same age trees where i did not heap up materials and water often.  it works great. it's also a continuous compost tea.  it also protects the trees from cold weather.  insulator year round. i'll try to do my own thread on it sometime soon.

Nice set up...the warm weather will be here before you know it

I love your hoop housing.   I think I'll use that design to suspend bird netting over my espalier set up.   Is that 2 inch pvc?

I'm thinking I can use a much smaller diameter since there's not much chance of me getting a snow pack on top

Tim Zone !0a

I wouldn't trade our San Jose 9b weather for that. The 3rd picture is beautiful though.....

It's 3/4" PVC inside of 1 1/4" irrigation pipe. Either one by themselves would bend and pinch in the middle.

I feel your pain. This was the view from my bed this morning.

I'm pretty sure that's not Austin or CO...

James. That's just mean.

San Diego is building a desalination plant near Carlsbad but they are expensive to run and putting that high salt concentration removed from the water back into the ocean is not good for that area either.

We will be in the mid-90's by the end of the week...we missed winter, barely has a spring and went straight to summer. I'm already watering my trees 2-3x per week but I'm on well water not city.
