Worst Tasting Fig

Understanding that taste is subjective and Brown Turkey aside, I wanted to know what everyone's lowest grade fig(s) was and why.

Dottato(Kadota) doesn't perform well  here in MA without heat.

Does one that's full of ants qualify? Tastes a bit like a rusty nail (or was it a galvanized). Well I couldn't stop eating a good fig just 'cause it had ants in it! :-)

Thats funny- I was repotting some of my trees and came across a little fig that I didnt know was there. I was so excited. I grabbed it, split it, then ate it without realizing all the dirt that I had on my hands. It was like when someone loses eggshells in scambled eggs but I didnt want to stop eating the last fig of the year.

Hmm thats an easy one whats the opposite of dark figs ?

I haven't tasted a full range of figs yet, but one that IMO has no redeeming qualities is something called Norman's Yellow. It didn't taste bad - it just didn't taste at all. Other than easily rooting, there are no other redeeming characteristics that I've observed.

With all the good figs 'out there', some should be sun-setted. I nominate this one.

Kadota fig.....to thick skinned, not much taste.

Oh,Martin....this is a good one!..

My late ripening Kadota tastes good when properly ripe.

Over priced box of Brown Turkeys bought from "Giant Eagle" store.

"TEXAS BLUE GIANT".....

I was warned that this variety needs to cook in the Southern heat...but I tried it anyway up North in New York City.  Don't waste your time Northerners.  After two years of waiting I finally got  to taste the two figs that didn't abort, and they tasted like corks...dry, insipid, corks!  What dreck!  Yech!

The tree was shipped down South to a friend.  She will try this fig tree in her climate, and see if it has some redeeming qualities after all.

Worst tasting figs:

-"Sunmaid" Dried mission figs (Albertsons)
- "Kadota"- I bought at Boise Co-op, the pulp was tasty but the skin was thick. Chewy? Some Kadotas were dry..
- "Mission"- Boise Co-op- Even though this is a high end organic store, they had so much mission fruit it tasted a little moldy.  The slightest pressure from a ripe Mission were so fragile it would peal/ ripe the thin skins. I purchased some ripe and a few that were firm to ripe over my countertop. Overall was okay.
- Brown Turkey- was actually delicious to my surprise, I thought I would gag at the first bite seriously. Brown Turkey had a nice smooth texture, nearly seedless. Sort of reminded me of Chirimoyas without the pineapple taste.

A Desert King that I purchased on line that I think is Black Jack instead, had not taste and was watery and mushy in texture.  It was a great looking fig but that was about it.

my desert king figs are a greener color. isnt blackjack a dark fig. now im wondering about what i got.

Every single fresh fig I've ever bought at Trader Joe's. Bleuuuuurgh.

Spans all the way from watery to mealy, making stops at flavorless junction.

last year's White Greek and Kathleen's Black. i had high expectation for both. i guess it was my fault. White Greek didn't have any flavor. Kathleen's Black was let down. they are both highly praised varieties, so i'll see what happens this year.

I was walking my son to school and passed a fig tree loaded with fresh figs. Of course I couldn't resist picking one, so I did, popped it into my mouth chewed then promptly spit it out. It was terrible, not just a bad tasting fig an aweful one!

store bought figs seem to always be bland....
