Would figs hurt a dog?

Hi folks.

I was saying before about how my figs aren't ripening because I don't see them fall off... well it turns out that my dog is eating the ones that fall to the ground!

Anyone else heard of a fig-eating dog?

Any danger to my dog?

Cheers :)

I feed figs to my Golden Retriever and he loves them!  He loves getting fruits & veggies from the garden.  Figs, apples, pears, carrots, snap peas, green beans, etc.  He's just not a fan of lettuce, but he eats healthier than most of my friends!  Figs won't hurt your dog unless he has some possible allergy I'm not aware of (I'm not a vet!).

Dog patrol my fig trees. Loves ripe figs. Breaks branches, air layers to get ripe figs

Thanks folks! I couldn't believe it when I looked out the window and saw him hoovering around. I heard the dogs have a disagreement the other day under the fig tree, but figured (haha) that the old dog had found a bone. Must've been a fig he was protecting. He had eaten stone fruit before, which is not good for them, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Silly dog. Better him eating them than the birds though.

can dogs metabolise glucose /sucrose in high quantity?

i was always told that they cant metabloise sugars and thus can get sick....

you can see this post http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120313210631AALVFJt

I feed my dogs with figs, dried and fresh, they seem to be fine with it but maximum 2 per day and they may only get that one time a week if I give to them at all (not very often)

I think your dog should be okay.

Dogs Eating Figs:

My beagle snatches figs from my VDB, when I'm not looking. Sneaky pup!   Grapes and raisins can be fatal for dogs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grape_and_raisin_toxicity_in_dogs

My dogs eat figs and chew the branches, now whether or not it's good for them, that I can't say. But after a few years of them eating them they're still healthy and full of energy.

The list of plants poisonous to dogs is extensive and includes some that are just irritating to their mouth or intestinal tract. Some of the most poisonous plants they wouldn't normally eat and are eaten only by puppies or by playful inexperienced dogs. Some like grapes and raisins are poisonous and they will eat them.

Figs are often listed as poisonous plants on those lists (http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/poison-control/Plants/fig), probably because the sap is irritating (proteolytic enzyme--ficin)  figs also have psoralen which could be activated by UV light after ingestion causing a skin reaction (photosensitivity).

That said, my dog loves fig newtons and is not above snatching ripe figs right off the tree if they are low enough. I would not want her ingesting the irritant sap.

My dogs eat all fruits and veggies I grow, figs included. Won't harm them at all.

My dogs love BT

Wow, that video of dogs eating blackberries brings back memories.  I had a dog that would curl his lips back so he wouldn't get stuck on a thorn and would pluck ripe blackberries from the vine.
