Wow! Check out this airlayer.

i made up my mind and am going todo a severe pruning to my tree, It had been awfully pruned for so many years, so i am taking airlayers from it, so that I can form my hedge a bit quicker- don't want to wait too many years...

i checked a week ago, and saw nothing, but today... oh..could not look without saying 'wow'. it has wilted since i planted it... but it will be oK.

I believe "wow" is an understatement.  Very nice job Grasa.

Yeah, I think it's "done" Grasa!

Did you score, what method did you use. I really haven't done to much with air layers but have a back hedge I'm doing as well.

did not score. i cut the ring of bark around the branch exactly how i did early  but i think the warmer temperature and lots of rain  made it go nuts. i used a cup container  from 7/11, which made the shape, my mix was whatever i had, dirty, styrofoam and left over spagnum moss.

You did a very nice job, Grasa. Thank you for showing.

Best,
Tam

Looks good Grasa...nice work...the hedge is off to a good start.   :)

We've been rooting for you!

When I cut a ring around the bark the branch dies and doesn't put out roots. I have to find another way.

Teach me your ways master.

Congratulations on your new tree!

Ha, that's way too funny Bob.

great job

A cup from 7/11!!!  What a great idea!

Looks fabulous - I am sooo jealous.  That's another thing I haven't done yet.

I hope it thrives for you.

Grasa,

Great job! well done..

Congrats,.you are a master!

What a super job! Wow, in this case, seems an understatement!

Great job Grasa (and Bob in the comedy section)!  How long ago did you start the airlayer?

You are probably cutting too deep. You only go in as far as the cambium where it's more moist, and the bark can be more easily pulled off. You do not want to damage the active water conducting tissue beneath that - or your branch will die.

If you do a search for air layering techniques here, you find that some just nick the stem, and others don't damage it at all and have good success.

Looks like a very strong air layer. Good job Grasa.

wow very good job!

harvey, i did not mark the time i put it in place, but for some reason, after I put in the tall cup, iwraped with aluminum foil, and it was high enough in the tree to get som sun. i'd think it took about 5-6 weeks.  i have others that istarted earlier but are not done yet, including one i started last fall. i opened and it has strong thick spikes, so, it will fill up quickly. i Also tie the branch down, so,the portion below the layer is giving me more side branches. it is like reconstructing the poor tree.

Nicely done Grasa, it gives me hope that I might just be able to do it.

this video was posted earlier, worth watching, even if you turn the sound on.
