Wow Sometimes I amaze myself!

Tired, cranky, having hormonal day, blah blah blah.....well, I didn't expect it to be so bad that I would root a cutting upside down and not notice until it was screaming it at me. LOL

Ha, ha.  That's a fig that really wants to live!  Amazing how some newly rooted figs will live no matter what while others seem to die at the drop of a hat.

that's one for the archive!  I would consider widening that hole, however, or it'll girdle pretty quickly.

I'm repotting it today and doing a very careful surgery to remove the offending cup.

yeah.. that's a good one :) would be hard to get that out of the deli container :) maybe soldering iron?

Not kidding about surgery, I'm using a scalpel to try to cut the cup without damaging too many roots.

That is amazing!
I think it is one of a kind :)
Now you need to think about the wasps for it.

@Tami, OK, that's a record breaker.
Lets drink to that Pete. LOL

I like that, "the offending cup." Puts the blame in the right place ;-)

Figs are survivors! Haha that's so cool. Thanks for sharing!

Can't keep a good fig down...

I have a cutting which has decided to branch out at the bottom node.  Mine is not in upside down... just roots and limb coming from the same place.

Tami,  That is TOO, TOO FUNNY.  It is amazing that it found its way out the side rather than heading upward toward the surface.

James,  do you clip those shoots/branches to encourage activity toward the top, or do you just let them go?  I've got some cuttings doing that (and also putting out shoots at multiple nodes along the cutting), but I don't have the guts to clip them off.  I can pop a fig embryo off no problem, but whenever I consider cutting an actual shoot/branch, I always wonder if THAT was going to be the only one...
Jim

Ha!  Never seen that before!  Hope the surgery went well.  :)

Hi Tami.
That's amazing. That little guy is determined to live, I would give him all the help it needs.

Good job Tami. If it had been me with that cutting I would have planted it in the correct orientation and it would have croaked. LOL

LMAO Tami .... You know penicillin was discovered by accident and it is now one of the most commonly used antibiotics we have. You may have just created a new way to grow figs.... I mean wouldn't that look so cool in a hanging planter.

Those are the nice deli containers made from thick plastic. I use the cheaper ones that are thinner and more clear. They rip nicely and make getting the plant out easy.

I think you could easily cut down the side and the bottom with kitchen shears to get that plant out when you are ready.

Very nice..sort of.  :)

You're amazing, Tami! :)

Name this one for Pete (bullet) - "bottom's up!"

BU is good initial for a fig. lol

I am taking a bow with a flair, thank you all for your comments. I am glad to provide the entertainment for the day! LOL

Surgery is done and fig is resting in it's 3 gallon bag but I will probably lose the greenery. It was already girdled and kind of floppy when removed. Shouldn't be a big deal with all those roots. Makes me wonder what else I have inadvertantly pulled and have yet to discover. :)

Tami,

What a fig !
Is it now out of the INTENSIVE CARE UNIT ?
Rooting and shooting out like that in a 'upside down' mode it must be a good performer.
Good luck

Francisco

So THAT'S your secret.   From now on I'm planting all mine upside down.  But I'll probably look pretty strange standing on my head.  Good save.

Very healthy looking plant. Good luck.
