Yard Before and After

So far I've managed to fit 29 trees in the new yard. I probably should have spaced them farther apart but oh well. 7 feet apart will have to do with 12 feet between rows. The other option was to go from 50 varieties down to 10 or 15. I started looking at my list and I couldn't weed out and more than 20 or so. Agh. Guess I'll be trimming them heavily each winter. Now if I could just keep the mockingbirds from tasting every fig I have, to see if it's ripe yet.

Looks good!!

Looks great. I was actually just looking at some of your listings on eBay lol. Small world. So what's the appeal to the LSU varieties of cultivars, and are there any cold hardy ones? All mine are from around the world but I've never had an LSU one

Thanks y'all. My appeal to the LSU varieties is that they all do well where I'm at (in the hot humid south). I couldn't stop with the easy to find (and cheaper) LSU varieties. To me, it's kind of like owning a rare piece of history with the DC figs, with the added bonus of having a fig only a handful of others have. I myself can't vouch for cold hardiness as I live in Houston where it rarely gets under 30 degrees, but I have heard of people growing Improved Celeste and Hollier with success up north. I'm sure there are other varieties but I've never had to worry about it.

Best of luck on your project.

very nice setup

just wondering did you just plant the fig straight into the ground? i read that if you wanted a fig that produces more fruit then growth you should restrict the root growth by digging a 2ft by 2ft hole and surrounding it with rocks or something so roots find it hard to grow beyond that. Has anyone here found this to be true?

Great job Brandon. Maybe you can post a video of the progress of your figs. Congratulations on your new place!

Be excellent to see in three or four years time. I love to see a garden filling with lush green growth.

I'll try to make a video when it's all finished. It's definitely a work in progress. I can't wait to go down the rows picking all different types.

Lobboroz-- I dig a hole 3x wider than the pots and fill with compost/manure then top it off with mulch. Where I live, there is thick clay anything past 10" deep.
