You Have ONE Chance!

The fig cutting you wanted forever is on it's way, but there is only one!  YIKES!  I'm thinking fresh bag of sphagnum, in my desk drawer, checked daily..........

What's the variety? And congratulations!

I am rooting now too some RDB , White greek and Natalina and the cutting cant wake up from dormancy... hope you have better experience..

BTW whats the variety?

Negretta.  I had it, rooted it, and lost it from a severe fungus gnat infestation.  It's so sad for me because it's known as the "rock fig," loves to grow in rocky soil, which we have.  It gets it's roots under the rocks into the dampness and grows.  We have huge boulders to make it happy, but the fungus gnats attack was deadly.

A kind member is sending me one cutting.  Fingers crossed!

I am jealous . nice fig there

If it's a reasonably long cutting (at least 3-4 nodes) you might consider cutting it in two and rooting each part using root riot cubes.  Root riot has been pretty much fool-proof for me, even with one node cuttings.

I'll order the root riot cubes now!  I really want that fig!!  It just fits our terrain!  We protect everything we plant with gopher baskets, because that pest is legion!  AND  Shhhhhhhhh I put poison down their holes, but they keep coming!! Actually fungus gnats are far worse than gophers!!

BYTW Rewton, thanks for the hook up!  I owe you!!  AND your buddy is also sending some rare wine grape cuttings.  How lucky can a girl be?  Not worried about the grape cuttings.  They will root, but Negretta makes my eyes smokey.  I pray it will grow.

Hey Suzi, Good Luck!! Hope that sucker roots for you!! : )

Suzi - good luck with the cutting!  I forgot to mention that I have used the root riot cubes with either clonex or dip 'n grow though others have gotten good results without hormone.

Good luck Suzi!

I had really bad luck with the root riot cubes.  The cutting would root so you couldn't remove it from the cube, then the cube would hold so much water that the cutting rotted.  If you try one part in the cube try another part some other way.

i had one NdC cutting last winter. that thing did great.. until it looked at me in the eye and croaked on me.. sigh.. hope you have better luck suzi!

I have a few like that right now. I received some really cool cuttings from a generous member. Some of them were long enough to cut into 2. It's amazing how much pressure a little stick can put on you.

Bob,  I hear you!  I did get some citrus seeds to root in the cubes, but not figs.  They just didn't work out.  I'll probably just really keep an eye on this one in a warm drawer, in sphagnum.  The cubes will come in handy for my seeds.  I've got a couple pine tree seed packets stratifying in the fridge, one for Christmas and one for nuts.  Pine Nuts!  Lots of veggie seeds too.

Jeff, yep!  Pressure!!

Suzi

I agree with Bob.  Choose the method you are the most comfortable with if you only have one chance - for me, it is root riot, for you it is sphangum.  Then try out a new method (like root riot) when you have more cuttings to play with.
