You'll never guess which fig this is!

You will be surprised when you find out what this fig is. Getting into the top 10 best looking figs of the year, most likely.

I don't have a clue as to what it is, but I'll bet ya me and mom could eat 15 of em a piece.

Brown Turkey  ( FN )

(just in case its not im running for cover under a fig tree of course a bushy one)
 ; )

I concur with Martin, but only AFTER seeing pics of BT(FN) on Jon's web site.

Good research job Martin!

tmc,
>>> The question is why would someone be surprised?

Answer (I think): there are  many, many  'mis-labeled' BT's...

Also Celeste's.

As for the first fig that had come to my mind; it was St. Jerome, not sure why, but I think it had something to do with the fig shape...

I want to say Brown Turkey, and for the reason Gorgi mentioned, and I have mentioned before there are many Brown Turkeys out there that are not the same variety.
Let's wait on Jon to tell us what this is.

I once had a brown turkey ( my 1st fig plant ) that looked similar in and out and i enjoyed the taste, i know many do not care for it but to me it was decent and dependable.
I gave the older plant to my neighbor who stored in his shed the next year it was completely dead, the 2 year old Sals i replaced did the same except it was wintered in his attached garage again this season it never woke up.
Now he will get a VdB but im going to store it and in season it will be wheeled in his yard and back in my garage for winter he has bad luck when it comes to storage .
Anyways i look forward to what this fig Jon posted actually is, brown turkey was my guess at first and then i looked it up on his site and it does resemble it but time will tell.

Hi Martin,

Sounds like the Older Gentleman neighbor, is like another Older
gentleman??? I know real good, did I mention knowing him "real"
good?

Me and your neighbor are going to make it yet;-)

Happy gardening

This fig could be Herman's MD Brown Turkey.  Mine is fruiting now and it is purple.

Vern

I am not sure why I have this feeling that if this pretty fig was a Brown Turkey, Jon would have hidden it and not mentioned about its beauty. But then it is possible that he may not dislike Brown Turkey as much as he pretends. Anyway he will let us know very soon.

My 2nd guess (funny) just a blue fig-shaped rock!
How long is this suspense supposed to be?
Remember those ~9 figs to be ID'd that got forgotten...

Gorgi
Do you mean Curling rocks when you say "blue fig-shaped rock".
That will be a neat idea for fig enthusiasts who also enjoy curling to have fig shaped curling rocks. There are number of flat figs like curling rocks. The handle may look like the one in Jon's second last fig picture here.

Like George said remember the 9 figs from last year i think it was ? Ah the suspense but thats ok in the mean time i watch my plants grow .

Dan the only thing i could think of to get that straight on picture of the eye was Jon perhaps stuck the stem in a pre made hole and took the picture from above it, perhaps a bunch of them to get just the right one which he did as usual.

Not really, I just like to know what it the heck it is.

Saint Jerome

Black Jack

Black Weeping

Brown Turkey

Cilentano

And the winner is Black Jack. I has never looked like that before. Another hiccup on the trail of fig IDing.

Jon still hates Brown Turkey. And he hasn't located the info on the last ID test. Sorry gorgi. I am still looking to get adopted by a rich sugar daddy, so I can spend more time on the figs. Anyone got any leads?

Ok, it is a BJ, it does not look like mine (Monrovia).
At least I was a (little) close about the St.Jerome.
You are right, figs are a mystery fruit.

Gorgi
Jon says that his BJ never looked like this before (& that is why he posted). So, it is still possible that his may look like yours most of the time, and yours (& mine/thanks) may sometimes look pretty like the mystery fig above.

Wow, that's a surprise Jon. Good news is I have a BJ and I almost gave it away. It was neglected in a way & the main branch died during winter inspite of it being indoor. It has some fruits again this year & I am sure I will get to sample some main crop figs this time.

BJ has been an interesting fig here. In the bad years, it is basically a BT, but in the good years is is a lot more like a Black Mission. It defintiely has a different skin than BT. it will wrinkle up and somewhat dehydrate on the tree, if the weather is warm and dry (as opposed to muggy). It generally is not watery or washed out like BT tends to be. Has a much earlier ripening time that Black Mission, also. Obviously it is ripe ehere, now.
