Young Black Madeira that might deliver

Repotted a Black Madeira I started from a cutting last year.  It has four figs that have made good progress for July so hopefully there is time for them to ripen.

Beautiful plants, Tom! Thanks for sharing....

Healthy looking plant

Newbie question: Is it ok to let such a young plant fruit? Especially given how slow growing this tree is? I am new to figs but have grown other fruit trees and nearly each case the advice has been to delay gratification.

I have a similar size BM tree that I just knocked several figs off from. Perhaps I was too hasty?

@Ramv - It all really a matter of personal choice. Some people let the trees fruit in their first year, while others will remove the fruit in favor of better vegetative grow. Most fig trees, with normal growth, can produce some fruit the first year without hurting the tree's growth. But the quality of fruit on the small young trees can be questionable. Personally I will only let the first year trees make maybe 1-3 figs, if there is doubt of the variety, just to confirm the variety (I expect to lose 1 or 2 to dropping or critters).

Thanks Cliff,
Most of my trees are legit-- from reputed nurseries and sources on this forum. I have a couple of unknown figs that I am tempted to let go to fruit early and try them.

Hi,anyone have any thoughts on the patterning on the leaves, light and darker patches, thanks U.K.

That's just the way that variety is when young. Could be FMV (probably is). As the tree gets larger and its root system gets more robust it seems to go away mostly. Sometimes reappears on a few leaves.
