Young fig trees - What to do during winter months

I have two very young fig trees (VdB and Olympian) that I got as TC's from Wellspring earlier this summer.

My concern is if I let them go dormant and overwinter in my garage they'll die.  I was considering keeping them indoors under growth lights for the winter season and then putting them out again after next year's frost date.

Is this a good option?  Or would letting them go dormant and keeping them in a protected area with temps between 30-40 be a better option?

If I don't let them go dormant, is there a thread that discusses growing them under growth lights over the winter?  Couldn't find one.

Thanks!

I had cuttings started in the spring, then go dormant that winter.  As long as you give a sip of water every so often during the winter, they should come back to life in the spring.  It's up to you on how much trouble you want to go through to keep them happily growing indoors.  But based on my experience, young trees will survive the winter being dormant in the garage at the temps you stated.  How old are they?

I grow many indoors under grow, lights during winter. Getting things ready for this year now.

I have those same two varieties also bought from Wellspring earlier this year. My Olympian is just over 4 feet tall and my VDB is just over three feet tall and they are both in the ground for me and will remain outside all winter. I have had them in ground since around May so I think they are well rooted.

Dave,

What type of grow light do you use?  I have a bunch of 3-bay T8 fluorescent lights that I use to start up seedlings for spring planting.  I'm not sure if these will suffice for the fig trees though.

With your setup how much growth do you see over the winter/early spring period?  Aside from getting more growth out of your tree by continuing to have them grow throughout the winter/early spring months, are there any other benefits to continuing to grow throughout the dormant period?

Does growing them throughout the winter screw up their ability to harvest breba or main crop the following season?

Thanks.

I use just simple Walmart shop lights and grow bulbs. The more lights the better. I never get breba crop but it does help with the main crop it seems.

Hi smithmal,
What is the size of the pot now ?
How big are the trees now ?
Do you get freezing temps in that garage or is it out of freezing ?

I often have trees that coming out of dormancy will sky rocket with growth thicker than the stem it is growing on.
IMO, if they would have kept on growing during the Winter, the stems would have been thinner and the tree overall less healthier.

Of course of you've got sort of a professional greenhouse, where you can monitor light, humidity, temperature ... You can get more growth out of your trees.
If the conditions are not perfect you may get light green growth, rot and leggy stems ... The choice and risk are yours :) .

I'm in Zone7, and I started cuttings this year in March -ok, as most years-, and they already are in the dirt ready to make the big sleep !
Good luck !
