Young LSU Purple

Picked a fig from a 2 year old LSU Purple that I have.  Everything I have read about this variety states that it is supposed to be mediocre when young and that it improves after about year 5.

Guess I got lucky because this was a great fig.  It had a really rich, sweet, figgy taste.  No berry or any other fruit taste, just yummy fig.  Sucks that I only had 1 to eat.

I have a young tree also. Hope you get more next year. I think mine didn't get enough sun. It gave one fig and it may of gotten knocked off...??? Anyway thanks for posting and keep us updated on your figs.

I had several 3rd year LSU Purps this past season I noticed the same flavor profile you described. Nothing really grabbed my attention about it. Just sweet and figgy. I wonder if ever develops any other flavor notes?

My LSUP was just sweet and figgy, but it had a nice, rich taste.  I guess if someone already has the dark varieties with berry flavor, this one is a nice compliment.

I have a third-year tree of this variety (just about 3 years old now).  I got 5 or 6 ripe figs from it this year, and they were not very good.  Not even much sweetness.  I've read about the reputation this one has also, as you mentioned, in terms of significant improvement as the tree matures.  That's the only reason that I decided to keep it for another year or two, to see if it does improve into something worthwhile for my climate / location.  But results this year wouldn't warrant keeping it, compared with so many others that do really well here.  I guess I'll see in a couple of years whether the mediocre quality here improves, or if it's because this variety isn't well suited to the climate here.

I'm glad to hear that you had good results already with a young tree of this type though!  Maybe it's a variety that really likes the heat.
