Help -- I need some advice!
I have three young trees that are breaking out of dormancy early.
All three trees are over 1 year old (i.e. they've had at least 1 full growing season in addition to their growth as cuttings. They may actually have been started in Summer the year before....so maybe they're 1.5 years old.)
The first is a Sweet George. It is putting out two proto figs (but no leaves yet.)
The other two are LSU Improved Celeste. Each have one or two buds that are starting to break and push out a leaf.
All three are in pots and are wintering over in my basement along with a bunch of others. I was worried that it wouldn't be cold enough. (It is a section of basement that is probably in the mid 50s). Maybe they got a bit too warm, maybe they got a bit too much water, maybe they were encouraged by the nearby grow lights over a nearby cutting bin...In any case, they're going for it.
Should I move these particular trees to the garage to encourage them to go back to sleep? Or should I let them roll with it and put them under the grow lights?
How about the proto figs on the Sweet George? I might have been inclined to let this little guy give me some figs this year...but I didn't expect it to start so early. (Again, this isn't a cutting...it is just a small tree.)
What do you think?
